Sleep Apnea.......if you have it, but dont use or havent got a CPAP machine, please get one, use it & please read.....
One of my closest friends that I have known for years was found dead today by her 13 year old son. At this time, there is no definite cause of death.........BUT we had our sleep studies done the same week & her results were bad! She had not yet went to pick up her CPAP machine.
Well, last night was her last night of sleeping with no CPAP. This was a 30ish year old woman raising 3 boys on her own, all under the age of 13, in the process of getting WLS.
So my words today are:
Please if youre a person who should wear a CPAP but doesnt for any reason, please reconsider wearing it......it could save your life.

I am so sorry for your loss and no truer words have been spoken.  I had sleep apnea and thank god I don't have it anymore.  My case was kinda special that I would only have sleep apnea when sleeping in a certain position which is not my regular position to sleep in.  I got the CPAP but used it like a total of a wee****pt drying out even with the humidifier set on the highest setting.  I sleep on my stomach with my face down in the pillow....I have always slept like that but during the sleep study i had to sleep on my back which at that time really killed my back but it also came up with me having sleep apnea......oh well.....I'm so thankful now for my RNY that i don't have sleep apnea anymore!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm guilty of it.... I was diagnosed a couple weeks ago and haven't followed up to get my machine. This is a wake up call.

Heather so sorry for the loss.. I am deeply saddened by hearing this as I didnt use mine for about 8 months. I do now. I also heard from a friend over the weekend that her mom had SA and she passed away last month. They didnt really think the death was caused by SA but the results show the death was caused by SA. So there is something to be said about this after all...I feel so sorry for the boys....I will keep them in my prayers..

Heather, I am so sorry for your loss and for those three boys.  SA is so terrible.  I wish my husband would get on the stick with his weight loss.  He was banded just about 3 years ago and regained most of his weight for many reasons (nothing to do with the band itself, except he MIGHT have a tiny leak), but he doesn't eat right and doesn't stay on top of fills, etc.  I could swear that his apnea is back just by the way he breathes when he sleeps and it scares the sh*t out of me.  He tried several CPAP machines and different attachments, but could not sleep with any of them.  I just told him about your friend and that I'm concerned for HIM and he just got defensive telling me he can't sleep with the CPAP and I had to zing back at him that's fine, but he needs to use his TOOL so the apnea goes away again.  Maybe I should just knock him over the head with the CPAP to put some sense in that thick skull of his!  UGH!  My condolences sweetie!

Revised to VSG (6/11/09) weighing 253...
