Hi All,

I have to schedule my Psych Eval and I could use some help with finding a Dr in the Baltimore area that has experience with doing evals for Pre op surgery patients.  I work in the Hunt Valley area.  Does anyone have a Dr they can recommend?

I got mine done by Ranesa McNally.  She's great.  She's been my therapist since I had the surgery, too.  I live in Bel Air, but I drive out to Pikesville to see her because I just love her.  She had the surgery herself, so it is nice to talk to someone who truly understands.

She also wrote a book on gastric bypass.  It is available on Amazon I think.

Hello & welcome to the Maryland Board!
I also used Ranessa, as have many here & she IS awesome! BUT she is a LCSW {licensed clinical social worker}. The American Bariatric Society states that a LCSW CAN do pysch evals for WLS; HOWEVER some doctors want a psychiatrist or psychologist, and even many insurance companies.
Like I said , I had mine done with Ranessa, and her report was marvelous! Then my doctor said I would have to have it redone with a psychologist or pyschologist. So I then went to a doctor in Annapolis, and also had to pay $100 out of pocket, which really sucked!
Check with your doctor & insurance company to see if a LCSW can do your eval......if they will accept it, I would vote for Ranessa!
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.  Ihad a consultation earlier today and the Dr was specific about having a psychologist or psychiatrist do the eval.  She sounds awesome but I don't think I'll be able to use her.

I wonder if you present Ranesa's credentials to your doc and ask if she will be ok he would accept her.

Besides having her own practice, Ranesa is also affiliated with the Bariatric Surgery Practice for David von Rueden. She performs the pysch evals for them. So she should be acceptable to anyone else. If you are still uncomfortable, then I suggest you ask you surgeon for some recommendations of the pysch folks they have worked with. When I first went through Dr.. von Rueden;s program, Ranesa was not part of the team, and he had a whole list of recommendations for the pysch consult. I used one of those.

debbie.....
you would think she would be acceptable for all other surgeons; I did too! I have Dr. Magnesun, and they were very adament on having on psychologist or psychiatrist. I did use Ranesa, and they said her report was marvelous, however it was not their requirement. I had to go back & see a psychologist to get another eval done. It really sucked because I could not get an appoinment with one who accepted my insurance until the end of summer.....so I found one that I could see immediately in Annapolis that I had to pay out of pocket for. But I didnt really mind since all my other appointments had been covered 100%. Knowing Ranesa is qualified, and the Society recognizes her as a person who could do the eval, one would think she would be accpeted by any doctor; however that is not the case apparently.

Wow! That is amazing! I did not know Ranesa at the time I had mine done. I knew that my insurance would not pay for it  and I paid out-of-pocket. I went to someone at Shepherd Pratt since it was close to GBMC where I had my surgery. To be honest, I don't know how they think that a person who talks to you for 45 minutes can really know what you are all about and whether or not this is  good solution for a person. Unfortunately, it is something we have to do to get the job done.

Thanks for the clarification. I did not know.

Debbie...you had 45 minutes with someone?  I spent literally 10-15 minutes with the psych that used to be affiliated with the JH Bayview practice last year.  She didn't even review the mounds of paperwork that I had to fill out prior.  It worked in my favor as she approved me and fortunately I haven't had any emotional eating issues since surgery so it's all good.  However, hearing what everyone else has said about Ranessa, I would have like to have gone to see her...even though it probably wouldn't have satisfied my surgeon's requirements!

Edited:  to change many to any...duh!  I'm an emotional sleeper now instead of an emotional eater!  LOL!
