Vitamin D question??
I had my six month post -op appt yesterday and my labs are still showing as in my 3 month appt that my vitamin d levels are still low. I have been taking a sublingual vitamin d 1000iu for the past three months. Surgeon does not want to prescribe a vitamin d because he thinks I can try another OTC brand with at least 5000iu to see if my levels increase and he wants me to have labs drawn in three months. He basically said I am not absorbing the vitamin d I am currently using which is twinlabs brand vitamin d dots.
My question is did anyone else have this problem? And if so, what type of vitamin D are you using now and did it correct the deficiency?
Thanks
Danielle

Mine has only been a tiny bit low so I was not required to add Vitamin D. However, I decided to do so anyway. Since I am at work, I don't have it with me. But I found these Vitamin D drops that you can add to food (I add to my protein shakes). I like that it is a liquid and a serving is one tiny drop. I will have to check and see how much is in a drop. In case you happen to stop by a Vitamin Shoppe I thought I would mention anyway.
www.vitalady.com sells some Vit D 3 capsules in various doses - I currently take the 5000 IU daily capsule---the capsule is made of thin gelatin and filled with a powder
I would not suggest the 50,000 IU weekly capsule (which is often what a rx dose is) as being post op- absorption of a once a week pill is doubtful.
When I was getting the Rx version----the insurance co. limited it to 4 pills dispensed at one time (no 3 month supply allowed to be dispensed) and so it ended up being $10 for 4 pills. OTC prices might seem a little high but not compared to what I was paying for Rx that didn't even work for me.
My vit D levels are normal now for the past 6 months since i am on a high dose daily version. The highest dose i could find at walmart was 2000 IU tablets so i went thru the web.
