A Proper Introduction...

Good afternoon to all...

I am on the board quite often but rarely post anything. I wanted to take a minute to properly introduce myself...my name is Tanya and I will be Banded on the 10th of April.

While I noticed most of the regulars here are RNYers I do know we both have similar "fresh out of surgery " post op instructions. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on life immediately following WLS...

You know...what to do...what not to do...what you need...what you don't need...

I guess I am looking for the best ways to survive those first few days home with this new WL tool. Any suggestions?

Hi Tanya!!!!  Welcome to the Maryland Board and congrats on your upcoming surgery!!

For the hospital and the ride home:

Lip balm
Pillow for in the hospital and to hug on the ride home - sometimes bumps hurt!
Comfy clothes to come home in - stretchy waist band

The hospital should provide you with everything else you'd need.

For your post-op days:

Water
Crystal Light or some sort of s/f drink mixes

As far as food, it varies based on what food phases your doctor will have you on.  I would imagine that your surgeon/nutritionist will give you guidelines - it's REALLY important, especially for the first couple of weeks, to follow their directives.  In the meantime, though - protein mixes, drinks (I wouldn't buy a lot, because your taste may change somewhat after surgery), clear broths, cream soups, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, s/f Jello, etc.

Let us know how we can help, and again - WELCOME!!

Tia

Hi Tanya,
Welcome to our corner on OH!
I am pretty new to all of this as well, and can tell you I bought lots of things and still have most of them.  I did not listen when everyone said to just take myself and my lip balm/pillow to the hospital... I packe ALOT of entertainment stuff that never got carted out of the bag.  Even my pillow turned out to be useless to me.

I was the exception with the pillow on the ride home - I had an ON Q pump that kept me comfy until after I was home - not sure if everyone surgeon does this or not, I had to request it but was given the info by my surgeon's office on what and if I wanted it...  I did!!!  I admit, I thought it didn't wor****il it was gone

On my first week home, I ate applesauce (I bought 3 packs of the little NSA cups, and finished the first pack today - 12 days post op), cottage cheese (I bought a quart of this and 8 cups, and just finished the quart on Saturday and moved to the cups, but can't finish a whole one), two cans of chicken and two of tuna (one chicken is all I have used...)

The one thing I couldn't have made it without is my family!  They did alot of running to get my things I didn't think about, besides bringing me home, etc.

Remember that while you will be walking in the hospital, getting up might not be easy - and when you gotta go, you want up NOW not when the nurse can get there - my husband and my mom were a godsend!

Good luck!  Ask away if you have questions!  I am open and will tell all LOL

Angie,

Thanks for reminding me to leave the kitchen sink at home...lol I too have a tendency to over pack.

No worries...I plan on keeping my husband close by for help with those last minute emergencies.

Doing the happy dance for you. I'm so glad you didn't have to wait until the summer. I know you're on cloud 9 right now. Congrats. Only 11 more days. YAY!!!!!
Let me know if you need anything.

Hey Candie!

WOW is about all I can say. I know I had my fingers crossed that all would go well but with my luck...who would have thought things would have actually gone this well. Just to think I started this process Jan 26 and BAM...surgery on 10 April.

However, I will say this...these 11 little days seems like forever from now. I know it's just around the corner but it's not getting here fast enough for me.

I know your surgery has been an adjustment...how are things going with you?

Hi Tanya,

I was banded on Feb 18th, so far everything has been going well. The info that Tia gave you is great. The only thing I wouldn't do is to buy a lot of the proteins products at once . Oh just in case for the gas - Gas X and Lactaid for lactose intolerance.  Wishing you well on your upcoming surgery.

Peace,
Cece
