Did anyone have the challange of having to quit smoking b4 surgery. I mean I know that you absolutely have to quit but I need to know how long was it b4 you quit b4 you had WLS.

I really need to know if it caused more complications from being a smoker (i expect to have RNY this summer).

What type of complications?

Also,  if you did smoke/quit and had surgery if you didn't have complications please let me know as well.

I quit smoking a month before surgery and I had only one complication right after surgery while I was in the hospital....I pretty much swelled shut and it took a day for the swelling to go down........it was about a month after surgery that I went back to smoking

hey there, thank you for responding. i guess the swelling could have been from any number of things since you had just had surgery.

Todays a great day to stop.  WLS is a great change in ones life .  Healthy habits should begin b4 it
Good luck
- did cold turkey marlboro lights many many  yrs ago-  no more morning cough, shortness of breath going up stairs or stinky clothes and car

You're right today is a great day to stop.  I've set April 1st as my quit date. I'll certainly have more than 3 months in front of me b4 surgery.  I hope that will be enough.

I quit 1 month before surgery, my doc said he would not do it if I didn't quit. So I went to my PCP and she prescribed me wellbutrin (sp?) I had tried many times before to quit cold turkey and I couldn't.

So 2 weeks on that and I was smoke free. It will be 3 years this June and there are times I smell it and want one so bad but my husband and I are trying to have a baby and I just dont want to go back. I dont cough or weeze anymore and I am so glad I quit.

Good Luck to you

Okay,  Congratulations, I hope you did well.  I guess I better get to quittin though DVR said he wants 3 months free b4 surgery.  I've set tom. April 1st as my stop date.  Isn't that ironic, and tomm. is April Fool's Day!!!  yeah I should have stayed quit when i went thru all the hard work a year ago.

Thanks for your response.

I quit in May and had my surgery the January after.  I wish I would have quit years ago.  Smoking destroys skin collagen and you are more likely to have saggy skin after losing weight.

Let me tell you that your Dr. DVR does a test prior to surgery and if you test positive he will cancel the surgery, I know because I have been there and I smoked for 32 years, it's been 2 1/2 years since I quit and it's the best thing I could have done, it's hard though so best of luck and be strong.

It's not that blood gas test is it?   I already took that one and the tech hit a nerve instead of my artery. I will never take that test again.

do you know, what kind of test it is?

But, yeah I know he ask for 3 months free b4 the surgery.  I've gotta do this and when I put my mind to it I will.

Tomm. is my quit date. April 1st. You know, April Fools Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks
