Has anyone every had a hernia?

Specifically an umbilical hernia? I think I may have one but my stomach is so big Im not sure.

Yikes, Mellie!  I know a couple people have had them - some have them taken care of during wls, some before, and some actually aren't discovered until post-op.

Make sure, if you haven't, that you see a doctor about this.

Thanks Tia. Im making an appt today to see my NP. I was wondering if this was something that could be taken care of during the WLS. Im not even sure how they would diagnose it in someone obese.

Hello Yes I have had 3 of them and currently have an umbilical hernia. The 1st 2 came from two c sections. The doc said they were from the incision. I went to the doc about the Umbilical one and he said he could feel it and I have a large tummy... He asked me could he take out my belly button to fix it and did I care if I didnt have a belly button.  I thought I didnt care and then when time came for surgery I chickened out. I had the 1st 2 done and the doc was great. He did them laproscopic and I had hardly no pain. He also reinforced the largest one with mesh... Dr. Choi is located in Glen Burnie and the other doc who has experince with larger patients is located in Bowie MD.  His name is Vincent Sayan I hope I spelled it right. I also have heard people have them repaired at surgery as Tia  said. Just check with your doc.. I still have the umbilical one and its been 8 years. The doc said that you could get in trouble if I left it since things can get caught in there and then I would have to have emergeny surgery.....Good Luck and let me knoe if I can help......Julie

Can you feel the hernia yourself? I dont know for sure if thats what i have but i have a suspicion. what symptoms do you get from yours?

Yes I can feel it. I lay down on my bed take a breathe in and push my belly out and hold. I can feel it. I think at times I have stomach pain and if I eat to much I have a pressure different than normal stomach pressure from say like gas. I have also had a burning but that only lasted a while and has know gone away. It is to the point that I dont notice it anymore..Its just there.. The doc said I will know if I am in trouble if I have extreme pain which knock  on wood I have not had... I hope to just leave it alone and I hope it will leave me alone too....

Thanks for your input Julie. Im pretty sure based on your description that I dont have one or if i do it may be small. Or my stomach may just be too enormous. When I stand I can feel a hard spot right above my belly button but when I lay down its soft and just mildly tender.

Yes mine was tender at time too. I can really feel mine when I lay across my bed... I hope you can get it checked so you will know what it is...Keep us posted...
