I have not had the surgery as of yet. I am going through all the steps the insurance company feels i need to. I have all my appointments set up and hoping to get approved in the fall. anyway for some reason wls came up at my office and i couldn't believe all the negative comments. i have only told a handful of people there so most of the people talking bad didn't know i am going through the process. why are people so mean and critical of people who have had this done? what do you say in response to all the "people die during that" and "i would try to do it myself and would have the surgery to fix my problem" comments? I just feel like an outcast. I don't know why i care so much i don't consider these people my friends i just work with them. It just hurts and when i do have the surgery will i then be the but of every ones joke too?

Amber, people are afraid of what they don't know and it's human nature to see a story on how many people died because of WLS, read the headline and not the details and make up your mind. I have 3 or 4 entries on my blog about this, attempting to explain to people the reasons and outcoems of the surgery. And, there are still folks who believe I could have lost the same amount of weight by myself without the surgery and I took the easy way out.

I don't associate with those people anymore becuase it's not worth my while to try and keep explaining to prejudiced individuals and waste my breath.

As long as my husband and my family stood by me,t hat's all that mattered to me.

Until people are faced with their own needs, their own frustrations from years of yo-yo dieting or have a family memeber that has faced it they are just plain ignorant and say ignorant things.   Chock it up to ignorance and let it go.   I chose to keep my surgery to myself.  I did tell two co-workers, one had LB so she understood, the other was a male friend I felt I could trust to keep my confidence.   Keep your faith and your head up.  Don't let's others opinion dictate how you're thinking or feeling and you'll be fine!

i have not told too many people here at work either. simply because i have not been approved yet. i have talked to a lady that had a friend that went through it so she put me in contact with her. everyone that i have talked to has had great success with maybe a few minor problem but it out weighs the weight they had been carrying around. i have 3 sisters i have told only 1of them because i felt she would be the most supportive and outspoken if she thought i had lost my mind:) i have also told my mom just because she is my best friend. my husband is supportive and wants to go to every doctors appointment with me. i am frustrated right now because i am on that 6 month diet for the insurance and i have only lost 14lbs. i am worried if i loose too much they wont approve me and also if i don't show them that i can loose it they wont approve me...grrrr insurance companies i wish i could just do it now and be done with that whole mess.

Ignorance and jealousy are lethal together. Obviously these aren't the brightest people around. Lets wait and listen to what they have to say, after you have WLS. When their jaw**** the ground, when they see how beautiful you look, see who has the last laugh!
