I would just like to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome. It was a very easy for me to decide to have the surgery but it was hard for me to come hear and tell stangers that I am obese. Strange? I have not told my family yet. Is that normal? I have only told 2 very close friends and my boyfriend. There are somepeople that I never want to tell. Like my co workers and not so close friends. Is that normal?

Trust me, during this whole journey, you'll run the gamut of emotions.  Yes, it's all perfectly normal.

As far as who you tell, that's an intensely personal decision.  I told/tell people on a need to know basis.  Obviously, you WILL want to share it with those closest to you, because their support will be paramount.

As far as your co-workers, I only told my boss, and even then, thanks to insurance laws, I didn't HAVE to share all of the details with her.  Unfortunately, she in turn, took it upon herself to share with others, but ultimately, none of that matters.

What matters is you doing what you need to do to become a healthier you!!

Of course, you ARE obligated to share every single detail with US!!!!  LOL!!!  Just kidding!

Tia,

Thank you so much. I feel a little normal. It's funny...... I dont talk about it to my friend and boyfriend about the details too much, but I feel like I can share everything with everyone here. I guess you all know what I am going through and will not judge me. I like that. I have a very strange question.....I go to the doc next week for the appointment before surgery is scheduled. If he puts me on a liduid diet, I am ok with that, but can you chew gum? CRAZY QUESTION HUH? I love to chew gum more then eating food, I am wondering if that will be a problem.

Bunny -

Nope, no judgements here - we've all been there or are going through it with you.

Unless DVR's criteria has changed, there's no pre-op liquid diet.  He'll encourage you to lose weight of course, and I'm sorry, but I don't know if you said if your insurance requires a pre-op diet, but trust me, you'll find out more than you ever thought you wanted to know.  A good hint might be to write down any questions you have for him - it's easy to get overwhelmed.

And yes, I chewed gum until the day before I had to prep for the surgery with the lovely Phospho Soda (to clean you out).  And I chew gum post-op.  I'm very careful not to swallow, so if you like to swallow (gum, you perverts!!!), and think you can't avoid doing so, I think I'd steer clear.

HTH,

Tia

He never mentioned a liquid diet but I hear so many others talking about it I was getting myself mentally ready for those words......."Liquid Diet". LOL. I have completed all the pre op test and diet. My appointment next week apparently is just a formality, before turning alll paperwork into the insurance company. In fact, I spoke to Rose yesterday and she confirmed that I had everything that I needed and was surprised how quickly I got it all done......... of course I did it quickly............I want to start my new life YESTERDAY!!!!! LOL. Thank God my appointment is only 7 days away. Its killing me.

Being able to chew gum will help me make it through this journey a little bit easier. I find that I chew when my head said I am hungry and my stomach says no your not and when I am stressed. I am sure there is gonns be alot of stress.......I am ready.

Hi there and welcome to the board.  Congrads on your decision to have surgery, for me it was the best decision I have ever made, wish I would done it sooner.   I am one of those individuals who has chosen not to tell people.  Only people that know are my boyfriend, my aunt and one friend.  Oh yea and my kids.  All of these people are the most supportive of what I've done.  I did not tell people at work or other family because I didn't want their scruitiny of what I was doing and hearing their opinions.  Plus I didn't want to be under their microscope and have to answer their tons of questions.  I still stand by decision not to tell people and don't regret it one bit.

Good luck in your decision and your journey.  Let us know if we can help.
