My First appointment with Dr. Schweitzer

I had my surgical consult with Dr. Schweitzer on yesterday.  It went well.  I had went in wanting the duodenal switch which he said I could get but would have to get in 2 stages because of my BMI.  He told me to think about it or I could just get the RNY.  I think I am going to opt for the RNY because I don't want to get 2 surguries.  Has anyone else expericenced this and what decision did they make.  I have researched the RNY and I know it would work for me.

Hi Kiya!!

Unfortunately, I have NO experience or knowledge of the DS, there are a few folks around here who have, though - hopefully, they'll chime in.

At my pre-op weight of 388, RNY was the best decision for me.  I'm glad I had it, BUT there are some advantages to others, too.  Trust your surgeon (Dr. S is one of the best), and go with his recommendations.

Research, research, reseach - a well educated wls patient is the best kind!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you.  I will keep you posted.  I have been researching all day.  I do trust him.  He gave me security in his experience.

No experience with the DS but I wanted to wish you all the best in your journey and welcome to the MD forum! Dr. S is a wonderful and very skilled doctor you are in great hands.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Hi Kiya,

I'm still pre op but wanted to agree with the research, research, research part.

I have been on the DS board and NOT ONE person will tell you they regret making the DS decision, be it in one or two parts.  That said, there are quite a few RNY folks that did not get out of the surgery what the had hoped for.  I believe choice of WLS is very personal so I don't want to sway you one way or another, just have fun reading and researching!

Good luck with your decision!

I had a similiar experience with Dr. Schweitzer. I went in with my heart set on RNY. However, after we talked extensively about my medical history he suggested the VSG. After doing much research and putting trust in Dr. S, I think the VSG will be best for me. I have a couple months to go before I have everything done for the approval process!

Go with your gut and like everyone said - research research research! Each surgery is different, but none are a "cure", only a tool. You gotta work that tool, whichever one you decide to get. :)

Hi. Sorry for the delayed response, I don't get to this board much. I'm a little surprised Dr. S would agree to do the RNY in 1 surgery but thought the DS would need 2. I do know that Dr. S expects his DS patients to be very well informed about the DS because the malabsorption isn't to be played with. On that note, have you been to the DS forum? Please come by and let us help you learn a little more about it. I know of some studies that might be interesting for you including the long-term weight loss stats between the surgeries.

I wish you all the best in your journey. Please feel free to PM with any questions you might have.
