Surgery Date-Dr. Averbach-St Agnes
I got my surgery date!!! So now I have all sorts of weird questions running through my mind...
Like... Does Dr. Averbach do more than one surgery a day? Mine is scheduled for the 18th of March at 10:15am... anyone else going to be "in" still or for the next 2 days after my date?
once I am there, if somone else on the board is having their surgery, can we meet up in the halls, etc.?
Are the rooms at St. Agnes private? I can't decide if I like the idea of being alone or of having the chance to chat to someone new! If not private, are all WLS patients clumped together?
Can I use my cell at St. Agnes? Any chance they have wireless internet if I take my laptop?
I can't think of anything else right now, but I am betting I will in the next few days!!

Hi Angie!!
Congrats on getting your date!! When is it?? LOL!!! I can't answer any questions about St. Agnes, although my surgeon operates there now. I'm sure someone will chime in for you.
As far as "anything else," my suggestions of things to take with you include:
Lip balm
A pillow (particularly useful for the ride home)
Comfy clothes for the ride home (while you're there, you'll be in a hospital gown, and you can always wear another one backward for a robe - no need to pack a bunch of unnecessary stuff)
Maybe a book or a magazine, although I doubt you'll feel up to reading. If you get bored, once you get the clearance to walk, do that!
Before you go, buy some SAMPLES of protein supplements. That way you don't waste good $ on something you might not like.
Stock up on water, Crystal Light (or the Walmart equivalent), and anything else that falls within the parameters of your surgeon's and nutritionists guidelines for your first week or so at home.
Hope this helps!
Good luck,
Tia

Thanks Tia,
My date is March 18th :)
I have been on a protein hunt... I am finding my fav to be Unjury, although I am the proud owner of a whole lotta samples, including a BIG tub of Nectar that I hate but had a 50% off any product at our local Vitamin shoppe, so I bought... (Fuzzy Navel) I also got my vitamins, I went with Bariatric Fusion and will plan to supplement with the Bariatric CHOCOLATE chewy calcuium when it is released...
This is my plan for now :)
I have more "diet" drink mixes than anyone will ever need, I am diabetic and easily bored so I keep buying 2-3 each time I go shopping, someday I might just have to use them all up before I buy more!
I am definately sooo ready for this! :)
My original planned date was way back in October...

Congratulations on getting a date!
I believe that Dr. Averbach and Dr. Singh *my doc do a number of surgeries in a day, I want to say at least 2.
You'll be able to find out who else is having surgery that day by checking the Upcoming Surgeries list to see if there's anyone who will be using Averbach, Singh, and I think Von Ruden is operating there now?
The rooms are not private, but they do try to put you in a room by yourself. I got a roommate when I had my surgery - Of course - the other was Dr. Averbach's patient and she had the lapband like I did. So maybe the banders get partners but the others don't. I notice that the docs use the 4th floor of the hospital for their patients, so you are likely to run into others (that is, if you can run) who had the surgery.
I used my cell phone, but you have to be really careful about calling out for more drugs. They seem to like to control how much you get. LOL. I don't know if they have wireless, but trust me, you're not going to feel like having a laptop there in the first couple of days.
good luck!

I know the Dr. Singh is no longer in practice with Dr. Averbach -- not sure where he went, anyone know? I don't know what other doctors do operate at St. Anges, but I will be happy with or without a roomate...
I can hope for wanting my laptop... That will mean I am pretty tolerant to pain, or the pain killers are not kicking my butt!
I am going to be one of these "Drug less" who is going to try to maintain with the least bit possible... I have alterior motives, my mother will be with me, and she is a pain pill addict -- the less I have in the house, the less she can take -- the less I need at the hospital, they less I take home, the less there will be in the house -- you get my drift? I am going to discuss this with Dr. Averbach as well, and hope he will call more in if I need them so I can take home minimal at a time -- my pharmacy will even break the down into smaller orders than what he orders if need be, I think!
Thanks for the well wishes and thoughts!!

Well, Dr. Averbach was not my surgeon and I have never stayed at St. Agnes, but I will share what I think I know.
Many WLS surgeons have certain slots reserved for their surgeries. It is not uncommon for them to do more than one in a single day.
Besides someone meeting up with you in the halls at St. Agnes, someone on this board can be selected as your angel. This is someone who can check on you at the hospital, pass the message on to the board of your transition to the losers bench, and just be there to assist as needed. I am available, if you want.
Don't know about the rooms. I had my WLS at GBMC and my surgeon requested that no one be put in the room with us. This way we could have someone close stay with us overnight if desired. I do not think this is the same everywhere.
We just had a MD board member in the hospital at St, Agnes and she was using both her cell and her laptop. I am not sure what kind of connection she had.
LOL - Yes, you will have lots of questions and lots of emotions. It is all normal. And we are here for you!
Congrats on getting your date!
Debbie

I would love to have you as an angel :)
I can give you my cell number and you can check on me... someone will answer it! :) My parents will be coming with me... I will be sending them home at night, I need some rest from them *grins* I am making hubby go to work on all three days I will be "in patient" because I want him to take the entire next week off to stay home with me! My "plan" is for us to drop him off at work before going to St. Agnes that day (he works at SSA) and the to head over and get registered, etc. Once 5pm rolls around, or my parents feel it is safe to leave me, they can pick him up and head home (best case senario) or come back to see me... Then go home.
I actually live up in York, PA, so trying to get hubby to work and parents to the hospital with me in one drive down each day... Normally we both commute together daily, so it will be interesting to see how my parents view our normal routine after driving up and down a few times!

Dr. Singh still operates at St. Agnes - he does the surgeries on Mondays and Tuesdays if he hasn't changed since my surgery in December. I know that Dr. Singh doesn't use the Geipe Road office anymore - he has a new one down in Maple Lawn, plus he sees patients in an office next door to the St. Agnes hospital on the days he does the surgeries. I see him on those days because I live near St. Agnes; probably 6 lights, two rights and a left to get home from St. Agnes.
I myself didn't have any pain medication while I was in the hospital because either I was a tough cookie or he did a great job. He did prescribe something for pain when we got home, but I never filled the scrip for Dilaudid or whatever it's called. I chucked it in the shredder.
Hopefully you'll be fine with taking tylenol, from what I understand , those who have the rnys can't have ibuprofens.
