When you've had to much to eat or drink. I hear about sip, sip, sip, but it seems I can take a real drink and nothing happens. I can also take about 3-4 ounces of food ( refried beans ) and not get that FULL feeling.  Is it painful when you get to much or what?  Could you guys tell what I'm supposed to be looking for exactly? I'm scared to take more than 4 ounces of anything but at the same time I feel like I still have room? Make since? Also I can't stand the protein shakes right now and my hubby went and bought me the protein bullets. Anybody only use these? I need more energy and I know I need the protein. HELP PLEASE.  Thanks

Candie -

RELAX!!!  You're only what, a little over a week out?  Your body has a lot of healing to do, everything is still swollen and rearranged feeling.

A word of warning before you find out the hard way - DO NOT take too big a drink or bite!!  It will SLAM you in the chest and make you start wanting to make deals with God!!!!  Continue sipping, but most importantly, make SURE you're following your doctor's guidelines.

Once you're healed, that full feeling will come.  It was a bit strange to experience it, because pre-op, eight slices of pizza wouldn't fill me, so I couldn't believe that two bites of pizza topping would.  But it will.  Some people get a "soft stop" signal - hiccups, runny nose, etc.  Actually, though, for me, if I eat just a little too much, I get the hiccups.  Nine times out of 10, though, I DO get that full feeling, so I know to stop.  If you get to the point that you feel stuffed or sick, you've gone too far.

Can't help you with the protein bullets, I know several people use them, but I just relied on the EAS Advant Edge ready to drink shakes.  I still do them, a vanilla in my coffee takes away any lingering protein taste.

So go easy on yourself, don't expect too much this soon out and like I said, follow your surgeon's and nutritionist's guidelines and you'll be fine.

Hugs,

Tia

Hi Candie,

You won't be able to feel full for awhile.  All of your nerves were severed during surgery and they need to heal.  I just concentrated on following the nutritionists instructions and not trying to push the envelope.  That being said, there were a few times that I ate more than I can even think about eating now.  I hear that if your pouch thinks you've had too much....it will send it right back up again!

I've tried the protein bullets....they are very sweet.  I found that I had to water them down and add a ton of ice.  I also did well with the Isopure clear drinks, although they are quite pricey!!

Another thing you can try...and it doesn't have near the amount of protein that other powders do...is No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast.  The contents of the envelope are like 8 or 9 grams of protein and when added to skim milk, there are even more.  I prefer it heated to cold...just heat your milk first and then add the powder.  Note:  this doesn't work for many protein powders!!

Good Luck!!
Heather

Oh believe me when you have too much in your pouch it will let you know :
I used to  start belching and I then knew I had eaten too much.

I used the protein bullets: some say they are too sweet -  What I did was water them
down -  3 oz bullet & 3 ounces plain water -  It helped and I could easily
drink that over the course of an hour.  I would not advise taking much more then 4 ounces
right now -  You need to let the pouch get used to food.

Candie, You have already gotten greatm advice.  I wanted to second the 4 oz.  I too had to stay at 4oz, and once when i drank an 11oz protein drink without thinking, I vomited.  So, I never did that again!  I am so happy for you that you're on the losers bench with us. Hug!

I think it took at least 2 months before I got the sensation of being full.....but it literally feels like that awful miserable feeling you get when you've eaten a HUGE thanksgiving dinner....with dessert....and then went back for another plate of food.........only you just ate a few ounces of food.  For now just measure, measure, measure.....my food scale is my best friend.

The dietician at Bayview (where I see you had your surgery) actually talked at the support group last month about how she wants us to stay away from the protein bullets beause they aren't a high quality protein.   She handed out an updated list of "approved" protein sources so I'd give her a call to double check with her....or there is a support group meeting tomorrow night at 5:00 and a dietician is always there.

The NSA carnation instant breakfast made with milk was easy for me to get down in the very beginning.  I have been drinking Nectar protein every day since my surgery.  I love the Strawberry Kiwi.  Its similar to Crystal Light so its nice and light and fruity.

Congratulations on your surgery!!
