I am looking for a therpist that specifically knows how to deal with WLS and obesity issues.  I am scheduled for surgery 4/7.  I am in Northern Calvert County but would consider driving up to an hour if needed for a good therapist . You can respond here or PM for those that don't wish everyone to know their business.  I will then check to see if they take my insurance.

Hi Melissa -

Unfortunately, this is NOT in your neck of the woods, but may be worth the drive to you.  Ranesa McNally, 410-602-0102.  She's located in Pikesville, and I know she has some late evening hours as well as some limited Saturday hours.

You'll hear nothing but good things about her!  She's had wls and lost 170 lbs, and has also had plastics.  She truly gets us and has been a Godsend to a lot of Maryland OH folks!!

Hope this helps,

Tia

Not sure this is any better distance-wise, but Dr. Marian Kaufman is in Annapolis very close to the mall off Defense Highway. She has her PhD and did her doctoral thesis on women who underwent gastric bypass, so she is very well versed about body image issues and all of the other issues we deal with. She is awesome. She is also very well versed on the dietary requirements and side effects of RNY and won't sit there and stare at you like a fool if you speak about something she doesn't know--she will find out and know about it next time. I leave there everytime feeling hopeful and inspired. I've been to a couple counselors in the past who I honestly couldn't stand. They all wanted to start back in the womb and figure out where my big demon was and often I felt like I was doing all the talking. She was pretty much like, hey, we may never know what started your issues, but you are here now and we know what we can do to improve things from this moment forward. She always gives me something to think about or do for the next week (not like homework, but something I should be doing anyway like writing down my food intake or taking a few minutes each day to relax and breate deeply), which makes me feel like I got my money's worth.

I also have a friend who goes to her and finds her to just be magnificent.

Here is a link to a page with her number and a few things she wrote about how she practices psychology. http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/40855.html

Good luck!

Denise
