Calling Schweitzer patients--swallow test???

Hey there. I seem to recall that Dr. Schweitzer does something during surgery to check for leaks, but now reading about others doing swallow tests the day after I don't know for sure. Does anyone know what he does?

Thanks!

Denise

I know with mine, I had to do a swallow test the same day after my surgery.  basically it's like an upper GI for bariatric patients in which you have to swallow this bitter tasting sweet syrupy liquid contrast and then they take pictures of it going down.  this is where my complication happened.  I didn't have any leaks but i was swelled shut at the place where my intestines come back together down past my pouch.  I was blocked for 24 hours!!!  i was so miserable.  I had that nasty taste in my mouth and I was just so nauseous....I was having dry heaves and everything until they gave me some medication to calm my stomach down.  I had to stay int he hospital an extra day until all this subsided and I could get down a liter of fluids.

Denise,
I did not have to have a "swallow" test.

I didn't have one.  The day after surgery when he came in he said he checked while we were in the OR.

Denise,

I didn't have the swallow test either and I kept telling all the medical staff that I couldn't drin****il he did it because the nurse at my pre-anesthesia appointment told me that!  Finally I asked his surgical team when they came in and they said that he only doesn't with "certain surgeries" and that mine wasn't one of the ones.  He does it in the OR.

Thanks for your input. I thought I might be going crazy and I'm usually very on top of everything--I couldn't believe I let this get by me, but it seems I really didn't and that he did what he said he does.

Take care!

No swallow test for me.  Glad that things went so well with your surgery and that you are now on your way to being a big loser!!

Yes I was given the upper GI test swallow the fluid and they watch it go through your system on a  screen, the 2nd day.  If he also does something during the surgery, i did not know that.
He is very good about replying to emails, [email protected] so you can ask him for details.
