You know I was reading thespen's update and it triggered something in me. I've realized that I'm not happy about my success so far with my wls. I mean I've lost a lot of weight and I don't know what it is but I'm not excited about it. I hit a really bad depression after my wls and I don't think i've totally recovered from it. I'm on anti-depressants (happy pills) but I don't know.........
do any of you have this similar issue? I'm wondering if it's time to change the happy pills

Look little brother imma gonna hafta come up there and kick ya in da pants. You are doing a great job and to be honest with you I ENVY YOU TERRIBLY. When I went through my bout of depression for another reason I looked in the mirror one morning and asked myself " Just what in the hell are you doing to yourself" and from that day forward I was a new man. I looked at the whole picture at a different prospective. I looked at the fact that I don't take life for granted and that there are people out there who are mentally challenged that need people to pay attention to them instead of me wallering in my own self pity which I don't see you doing anyway. You are a strong man mentally and you knew what you wanted when you did the surgery and it was to be a smaller you. I have hit a couple of lows also but when I take a break and think about the low I also think about the highs like with you for what you did for yourself you will live a longer healthier life. Now the thing that gets to me is that alot of foods that I use to eat I can't have anymore for the rest of my life. The only hitch is that I will not give up my chinese food that I treat myself to every other friday LOL. There are also all these children out here struggling with their weight and until they are of age nothing can be done as far surgery. So as for you and I we are strong individuals and we can do it, you just keep up the fantastic work little brother because YOU ARE THE MAN, DUDE.. Talk to you later.
Hey big brother :) I want to thank you for your awesome words of support and the kick in the seat. I totally 8understand that there are people out there far worse off than me. It's definitely time for a medicine change for me. good thing too I've been taking this medicine for the past 6 months and I honestly say that i don't feel much difference.
I am not a pharmacist but I work in psychiatry so am exposed to a lot of these discussions with patients.
Antidepressants can take as long as 4-6 weeks to realize the maximal benefit in mood. Not sure how long you've been on it. If longer period of use, I would suggest a prescription change- or a dose increase. There are a few classes of antidepressants and each class may work on different brain receptors or work in a different way. Some also have an anti-anxiety side effect too- like Lexapro and Paxil. Wellbutrin tends to have an "activating" side effect and can create weight loss and added libido. Most other antidepressants could to have side effects of weight gain and "negative sexual side effects". Some have a sedating side effect. Not sure what you are taking and its mgs but many of the antidepressants are enteric coated or hard coated and may not be absorbed fully by post ops. Anything with XR or SR --extended or sustained release will not absorb. Wellbutrin is one of the few antidepressants that does not have the weight gain side effect- plus it comes in regular format- generic. Be sure its not written in the XR or SR format. One potential drawback is you may have to take it 2-4 times a day. Generally if the pill is prescribed once a day or once a week - there may be coating/absorption issues for post-ops.
Also, the Rx Abilify can be used in combination to "boost" an antidepressant- get it working sooner and stronger. It helps with anxiety issues too and have no sexual side effects and is weight neutral reportedly.
Hope you feel better soon. I can't say I was ever "excited" about my weight loss. I have been pleased/proud of my accomplishments. At one point I was heavily mourning the loss of my old relationship with foods. I still mourn it - but not as often or as strongly. Hang in there.

Hey Aaron,
I was on 75mg Effexor XR prior to surgery, since we can no longer take the extended release, my prescription got changed to 37.6mg twice per day. Unfortunately, taking a second dose in the evening caused me some sleeplessness, despite taking another drug for sleep. I switched to taking all 75mg in the morning and have done well with it since.
If you've been taking your current drug for a while and you feel like it's not working for you, it is time to look at either switching prescriptions or upping the dosage. I was on Zoloft for many years (7 or 8) when it just stopped working. Over a years time...or so...my doc and I tried some others (added Welbutrin, switched to Lexapro, and then Prozac) before finally finding sucess (for now) with Effexor. I have both depression and anxiety disorder so I have to take something that treats both!
Good Luck and keep us posted! I feel for you...I know how it is!

Like everyone said, your meds might just need to be tweaked. I know you didn't post this to get our compliments - you get a lot of them anyway!! You HAVE done an amazing job, both with your wls and the battles that existed in your life pre-op, with your substance abuse, etc. You also have a stressful job, which, depending upon the day, you love or hate - we can all understand that.
Maybe, too, it's that you've had SO much happen in a relatively short amount of time. Wls, chew toys, potential mates, buying the house, etc. - hell, I'm overwhelmed when I think about all you've accomplished!!!! And, like you said, you were in a deep depression, and it's not something that you can crawl out of overnight. And, you've been stalled since Christmas, which has you very frustated, and maybe on a subconscious level, you're terrified that this is it!! It's not, trust me. The best is yet to be!!!
I vote for talking to your doc and seeing about having the meds readjusted. You DID feel better on them for a while, and now, not so much - that's perfectly normal in the world of depression meds.
You KNOW you're deeply loved on this board, again, I know that's not WHY you posted this, but there it is!!!!
