5 Day Pouch Test - Day 5

Even though I am missing some of my favorites (my morning oatmeal) while doing this test, I do think this has been valuable. I do realize now that I need to try to eat more solid proteins in my meals. Because my life is crazy, I tend to go for convenince. However, some of my conveneince items, are also slider foods. I am going to try and pick more "stick with me longer" types of foods more than I do now. The discipline of following this program has also helped me avoid some of the extra snacking I have been doing. Hopefully, I will be able to continue this now.

So how are the rest of you who participated in this round of the 5 Day Pouch Test doing? Things were sounding pretty good earlier in the week. How are you feeling about it now?

P.S. I already know what I am having for breakfast tomorrow since the test will be over - oatmeal! Awww - how did you guess - lol!

Debbie

P.S. For those who have not been following along when we have been discussing this, here is the link to the site that explains it all - http://www.5daypouchtest.com/

Well, I have to admit that I went as far as last night and then I ate things I wasn't suppose to. The next time (if there is a next time) I will def have to do more planning.

ps...Deb...you might want to go to bed xtra early tonight to get up and eat that oatmeal. I never did find out if the shakes I have in the morning are sliding right through.

Hi Gail!!!!

You know, you're right - no one answered your question from the other day.  Everyone told you what they or their doc/nut considered protein dense foods, but no one answered this:

SO MY QUESTION IS THIS.... If Slider foods slide right through the stoma into the jejunum, what happens with protein shakes?  And yogurt???

I'd still like to know myself.  Although a good answer is, I still feel full even after a thin protein shake, so SOMETHING'S sticking, I guess!!!!  As far as the yogurt, at least the Greek yogurt that I eat - it's very dense and thick, so I really can't see that "sliding" right through.  Now that I've further confused you.....!!!

Have a good weekend!!

Hugs,

T

Gail,

Yeah - I don't know the answer to that one either. However, I do not plan on giving up my fav slider foods, another is my frozen choc mint protein shake. I figure our MDs and Nuts would not tell us we can have these things if we should not. So I will continue to have my shakes, my Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. It just may not be as often. There have been some days where many of my meals have been slider foods. I am going to try and spread them out a little more. I do feel less like eating again when I am feeling full for a longer period of time. So maybe this will help me resist snacking more.

Hi Tia here is my response to Gail about slider foods.

Here is a good definition of.......

A slider food is an old food friend that tastes good in the mouth and feels good in the pouch, though it requires liquid for the most comfortable digestive processing. Presumably a dieter’s best friend (pretzels, crackers, popcorn) a slider food can be consumed in unchecked quantity without immediately contributing to weight gain. A slider food has trace nutritive value and scant satiation factor: it neither feeds the body nor the soul, although we are temporarily comforted in taste satiation, our nutritive satiation continues to crave regardless of the feeding of slider foods.

So the protein drink or shake , cottage cheese, yogurt are not a slider foods.  These contain protein and are not empty calories.... I hope this helps hon.

Hugs,

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Debbie. Thanks so much for posting. I did ok. Last night I did cheat and snacked a bit. I had 1 oreo cookie. I know very bad- exp on the pouch test. But it was a really stressful day.
I have not posted because we don't know exactly what is going on and  I don't want to make a big deal of it if it is nothing. BUT I feel like I need to put this out there and tell someone.
About 6.5 yrs ago, I had a tumor in my abdomen. I ended up having numerous surgies to get rid if it. The final surgery was in Jan of 2003 and at that time they removed the left rectus muscle and part of the midline oblique. They placed gortex mesh, and thankfully till now I have remained tumor free. This week I had my yearly appointment with the Oncologist. He is concerned about several areas by the initial surgical site.  I knew something was wrong by the way that he acted. I am going in to have a cat scan done next Saturday. this has kinda placed a lot of things on hold now. I also see the Dr on Tueday about my gall bladder. I am just really stressed as I feel like I have made so many changes to get myself healthier and now all of this at one time.
Sorry to dump on everyone I just needed to get this out. Thanks for listening.

Wow Diane - Stressed I think is an understatement. I can imagine the complex emotions and fears you are experiencing right now. I know it is harder for me to say than to do, but try to stay positive and take it one step at a time. In the meantime, I am sending all good thoughts and prayers your way. And feel free to dump on us at any time. If there is anything that I can do for you, please let me know.

Debbie

P.S. Your 5DPT is not blown because of 1 cookie. Look at all of the other great things you did this week! You still did very well and I am certain got a lot out of it.

((((((((((((((Dianne)))))))))))))))))))

I am so sorry you are having this scare to deal with right now.  Goodness girl just one oreo cookie? You are good!  I would be packing on that "slider food" if I was dealing with the amount of stress that you are dealing with.
Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers.  Please try to take it easy I know easier said than done.  Please keep us posted on your situation.  I am here for you if you need to talk.

Big hugs to you!

First, ((Dianne))) I'm thinking only good thoughts for you. I hope to hear good news when  you see both docs next. You are healthier. You can handle these things, because of the strides you have made to get other parts of your life healthier. You can keep up with your kids, and accomplish a lot more because you are healthy.

I don't think one Oreo blows the 5DPT. But, I did have a pack of cheese on wheat crackers tonight. I was starving, and didn't get a real break at work. I was lucky to carve out 3 minutes to get the crackers. Water didn't cut it, I did try.

I have to say it was worth it to me, but it was a hell 5 days. It was definitely the wrong time for me to do it, since work was very stressful earlier in the week. But, until I had crackers, I really did pretty well. I have lost all of the weight that I gained back, depending on the time of day that I step on the scale, I had gained between 5-8 pounds. I'm back down to 173, which is my lowest weight yet. I'm just glad to be on the losing side again. If I can lose a bit more, I'll be happy. If I can get under 150 by the end of the year, I'll be the happiest girl on earth.

I didn't really learn anything during the 5 days. I have no idea what I can and cannot eat to use my tool to it's fullest (no pun intended) potential. I think that is more the purpose of the 5DPT. I just ate when I was hungry, and ate what was on the list. I was too busy at work to really pay attention to what made me fuller, and how long it was between meals. I ate (or drank) when I was hungry and I could find the time. One thing I did was got rid of some cravings, like sweets. I've been out of control, eating anything I wanted. My eyes see sugar free on a label, and just assume I can eat it. So, I'm vowing to be better about that.

Thanks to my friends who joined me on this venture. Just knowing others were out there trying with me, helped motivate me.
Hugs!
Kathy
