odd likes and disklikes as a post op?

Hi all...I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced some of these changes (that I consider strange for me) as a post op.........

1. I used to LOVE any and all meat/poultry but now as a post op some of it just disgusts me.  Marinated meat like grilled chicken breasts (ie: on the salads at the double T diner) and  marinated pork roasts are really unappealing to me now.  I would choose to eat seafood over meat/poultry any day now.......which is odd because I was always a big chicken, steak and pork eater.  I do eat meat and poultry (medium rare steak....dark meat chicken....turkey sausage....canned chicken...and ground meats)  but if I had a choice, I'd always pick the seafood over the meat.

2. I am extremely sensitive to smells  now.........this might be gross but things like my dogs' poop, human poop (I work in a nursing home), farts, garbage, and the smell that is sometimes left behind by food in a tupperware container make me gag like crazy.  I NEVER had problems with gagging or sensitivity to smells as a pre-op.

I've only had an issue with food ONE time since my surgery and it was about 2 months post op when I ate too big a piece of "prime rib" from a subway salad and didn't chew it well enough...I had to make myself vomit because it wouldn't go down.....so its not like I've had issues with tolerating food which would maybe explain the meat issue.

I guess its just one of the odd things that happens as a post-op.  In the big scheme of things and out of all of the possible problems to have as a post op, I'd say I'm pretty lucky for these to be my only true problems (oh, and the fact that I used to LOVE cold weather and now can't tolerate the cold whatsoever!).  I LOVE my RNY (down 63 lbs in just under 3 months!) and wouldn't trade this experience for the world.....I was just wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar experience.

Lauren -

I feel like *I* wrote this post!!!  For some reason (I've heard it's because of the nerve cut during surgery), RNY patients DO experience weird things regarding taste, smell - for me, even texture!!!

For the longest time, once I was full, if others were still eating, I'd have to get away from the table, because the smells would just make me gag.  I couldn't box up leftovers, clear plates - nothing!!!  I remember my first Christmas post-op, I went to Outback to get a gift card, and just the smell in the parking lot nauseated me!!  Same thing with cooking smells - onions - ICK!!!!

You're right, in the whole scheme of things, it's NOT a big deal - it's more annoying, I guess.  It WILL get better - I'm a lot better now than I was with it.  Some things will still set me off, but I've always thought that eating post-op was like a roll of the dice - what you like and can tolerate one day, you might not the next!!!

Your 63 pound loss is AMAZING!!!  I KNOW how good that makes you feel!!  Keep up the good work!!

Hugs,

Tia

Hi Lauren,

I have found that my tastes have changed somewhat.  So far I haven't had trouble with any meats except for ground beef earlier out...now I'm fine.  However, I seem to tolerate meat better when it's very moist.  Otherwise it's like lead sitting in the pouch.

I'm right there with ya on the smells too!  I've never like the smell of cigarette smoke but now it makes me gag.  Unfortunately my husband smokes and after he comes in from the garage, I can't get near him!  I've only been out to eat a couple of times and have found that if french fries are really greasy...the smell of the oil makes me nauseous.  Also some other smells like vanilla scented things or stinky flowers, I also have issues with.

Truly an adventure sometimes, huh?!

Heather
