Fruit

Okay really... what's the skinny on fruit? Is it bad for us? The carbs in it I mean. Do they count as negative carbs against us?

I have recently fallen in love with fruit and am not sure, am I not supposed to eat it on a regular basis?

I have been having fruit with cottage cheese for breakfast or raisins with oatmeal.

HELP! I'm cornfusled!

Hey Ren!!!!

Yes, you can have fruit - natural, of course, is best.  If you have canned, make sure it contains Splenda or is packed in its own juice.  Keep in mind that you can still dump from some of the higher sugar fruits - watermelon, cantaloup (all my faves).

However, that being said - get your protein in first, and then if there's any room for fruit, have at it!!

You HAD to know that this was going to be a PSA for protein now, didn't you?????  LOL!!!

Hi Ren,

I started eating some fruit on the pureed stage, based on the menu that my nut provided.  At my 3 month post-op appointment my nut told me to start eating "raw" fruit like apples, pears, etc.  In the past few weeks I've done some NSA dried fruits from Trader Joes (apples, blueberries) as well as fresh apples, pears, bananas and frozen strawberries and blueberries.  They don't add much as far as protein is concerned but they are good for you!

Okay, that's what I kinda thought. But then, when I looked at my carb count yesterday I was shocked by the numbers!

I've been enjoying fresh canteloupe, strawberries and grapes *dangit, I gave my grapes away!*

My nut said you need the carbs from fruit! Your body needs good carbs and fruit is a GREAT way to get that! I love LOVE fruit!!! I have went through some major watermelons and tangerines lately! hahahaha

Oh, man, that is the ONLY reason I'm looking forward to summer!!  Good, local summer fruit!!!

Oh, and Jilly, IT'S SNOWING!!!!  In Pikesville, anyway!!!!!

Sadly, I don't think the peanut butter egg I ate last night counts as fruit OR protein!!!!!!  SIGH.

I know each nutrionist has different views but mine stressed VARIETY in my diet. She said yes PROTEIN FIRST but you need to eat veggies and fruits as well. If I want something sweet sometimes ill do some strawberries with some splenda on it, and yummy what a treat!!

I agree with everyone. There are good carbs and bad carbs. Fruit and veggies (at least many of them) are good carbs.
