gas?

Just wanted to see if anyone else seems to get gas from fresh salads?  I'm about 2 1/2 months post op and just started eating salad.  For the past 3 days I've eaten a salad (about 1 - 1 1/2 cups) at lunch topped with protein such as tuna salad or turkey and Newman's Own light Balsamic dressing.  The past 2 afternoons/evenings I've developed gas....last night it was painful and now I'm developing it again today after eating salad for lunch.

This might be a dense question, but do fresh veggies cause gas?  My salads have consisted of a mix of romaine lettuce and spring mix, cucumber, shredded carrot, a TINY amount of finely diced red onion, a few cherry tomatoes, and a few tiny pieces of raw broccoli.

Any insight would be helpful!

I found this from Web MD. It includes the foods which most commonly cause gas, vegetables are on the list. I have noticed an increase of gas also with some foods, dairy especially.  I know I sometimes use some of the OTC products to ease this.

Remove the Broccoli, cucumbers and onions they cause gas. But Broccoli is usually the major culprit,

Or take gas x when you eat.

Take care

WOW! Really? I never have probs with broccoli ;o) I cant have salads until 7 weeks out though according to my Doc because it can get stuck. But the only thing I have found to give me gas is milk or yogurt. LOL

Oh yeah!   Look at the link Debbie posted above I am sure broccoli is on the list..
when I first began to eat salad after surgery it was all the sudden my favorite food. It was so yummy.  If you eat brocolli maked sure it is steamed soft and don't eat the stems just the florettes.
Yes I get gassy with dairy all the time now.

My list from my surgeon/nutritionalist just says not to eat broc raw. See I dont do that. I cant stomach it raw. LOL It says to eat it soft. I tolerate it soft really well. ;o)

The fat stems have very tough skin and even if it is soft and cooked it can get stuck.  So my list said to stay away from the stem for a while. I can't remember how long.  I remember getting sick eating peas when i first had them I was 8 months out.  Not anymore thank goodness cause I love sweet peas.

Yes, raw broccoli is a major culprit as Cira said!!  Cooked isn't as bad, the more mushy it is, the better.  I have heard the same about raw onions.  I'm going to have my first salad tonight (I've been afraid to try it), so I can report more tomorrow!

Thanks everyone.....I'll be sure to at least leave out the raw broccoli.   I always make my lunch for the next day while I'm cooking dinner so for tomorrow I have a nice salad (minus the broccoli) topped with some salmon (from tonight's dinner).  I'll see how the gas situation goes without the broccoli....if it doesn't make the situation better then I'll delete the onions and see how it goes.

Raw broccoli and cauliflower are my FAVORITES!  Before surgery I would always take a baggie of raw veggies with dip or salad dressing for lunch or I'd have them instead of a salad with dinner....broccoli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, pepper strips, cucumbers (my absolute favorite!), and baby carrots.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE vegetables....especially raw ones!    I've been doing really well post-op with a few baby carrots and a few slices of cucumber.  I buy tatziki from costco and  use it as my dip.......and tonight for dinner i had the tatziki on my salmon.....it was soooo good.  I had salmon, brussel sprouts and 1/4 sliced tomato.  Yum.

For now I'll stick to soft cooked broccoli and try it raw again sometime down the road.
