I seriously have issues.
I cannot break my bad habits. I don't know what the (@* my problem is. I'm really angry with myself because I do not know how to fix it. I need to change my eating habits before I get WLS. If I can't do it now, how will I do it then?
For example, I was trying to be good tonight. I brought a lean cuisine panini sandwich for lunch/dinner (I work late shift). BUT instead someone was ordering out so instead of saying "no thanks, I brought food" I proceeded to order a cheesesteak sub. WHY OH WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF??
What makes matters worse, is my latest blood test results show elevated cholesterol, triglycerides and glubolin (whatever that is). Even with the fear that these things can kill me, I still can't manage to eat healthy.
Should I see a shrink?? I'm at my wits end. I just don't know how to mentally get "in the game". I want to lose weight more than anything, but I constantly sabotage myself.
Edited to add: Right now my brain wants something sweet and it's taking every ounce of willpower I have to not go to the candy machine. I get this way after just about every meal. GRRRRRRRRR

Its difficult now.... it will get easier once you have wls. Once the "deal is done" you will be extremely aware of your little pouch... and it will talk to you and tell you what you should and should not have.
Don't fret.. I ate like a pig up until the night before surgery.. wanting to get my "last meal" in.... I had a last meal for about 45 days..
I still go out to eat.. but I'm very conscious on what goes in so as not to cause any problems.
You'll do fine.
~hugs~

Please dont beat yourself up over this. Just like everyone else said it *does* get easier after surgery. Well because first you just physically cannot eat certain things anymore and also you are restricted on the amounts you do eat. I also have found what I *want* to eat has changed drastically since surgery, My taste buds have changed tremendously! For instance pre-op I could have eaten my weight in fast food french fries.....now OMG
The other night for the 1st time since surgery I took a bite of one of my daughter's french fries and I had to spit it out. The taste just gagged me sooo bad it was horrible!
Also preop after every meal I wanted something sweet. Now hardly ever do I want something sweet. If I really do a S/f fudgesicle does the trick or even a protein bar will satisfy that craving.

Hi sweetie. You are so not alone. Sooooo many of us go through that pre-op. When you are told you CANT have something you want it TWICE AS MUCH! We cant help it. I was like that on my liver shrinking diet and even cheated on it a few times. Boy was I in for a shock when I had surgery. Now you KNOW you cant put that in your mouth because you dont want to deal with the pain in your chest, vomiting, dumping etc. Your brain starts getting use to that real quick.
(((((Hugs)))))))) Everyone usually sees a shrink before surgery so I think it is a wonderful idea. ;o)

I agree with everyone else on the board. When you can't have it, you want it more. Then when you have the WLS (I had mine on the 16th) -things will change. I don't like the taste of coffee too much anymore, and don't care for the sweets or breads anymore - at least for now. And I don't have restriction yet until my first fill - so I'm on a roll with knocking out my bad habits. Food does taste different to me nowadays.
I was ordered on the preop liquid diet and as much as I wanted to cheat, I told myself if I cheated, I couldn't have the surgery; and that hey, when I move to the pureed stage, I'd treat myself to something special. And the same for moving to Solids (which is tonight YAY!!!! G & M Crabcake for Dinner! )
Save something special for each step of the way and keep your eye on the prize!
We'll be here to welcome you to the Losers bench!
(By the way, if sweets are your weakness, I may go for those sugarless ones.....)

I totally agree with Skulldoctor. If we were able to break the habits and stay on a diet we would have not needed the surgery. I truly believe that this surgery if for people that absolutely cannot lose weight any other way....will power included.
I know with me that if I keep my protein way up there it may just ward off the carb monster. I do make sure I have a complex carb with my protein though. That is just a plan that I am on to heal sugar addiction.
Don't be so hard on yourself. That guilt will just drive you to crave more sweets as we will always look for comfort food to soothe us when we are feeling so bad.
I'm right there with you and I wish you success.
Most important.....DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP!!!!!

I didn't read what other people wrote so not sure what they said. i'm sure it was helpful. i am someone who went into the hospital for binge eating. I still eat badly but i've lost over 100 pounds despite my stupidity. the fact of the matter is, you might always struggle with food but with the surgery, the damage is so much less. I can't eat like i used to. i've tried, more than once, but I just can not. i would not be 100 lbs less without the surgery.
I definitely suggest a therapist though. without one, I would be in even worse shape. i know it's hard to be kind to yourself but the truth is, you know what is good and bad for you and you are choosing the bad cuz of your negative feeligns about yourself. If you try to nurture postiive feelings, the desire to eat bad things will reduce if not go away. but that takes alot of work and help from others.
let me know if you need anymore help. I am here for you. in fact, eating pretzels right now so I know how it is !!!!
