ALCOHOL AFTER WLS
Agreed!!! But it's certainly confusing for newbies!!! I remember going to a nut a LONG time ago during one of my multiple attempts at DIEting, and she sat me down with a little "picture" book and told me to choose which of the two on each page was best for me:
Grilled chicken vs. fried
PBJ on white bread vs. PBJ on rice cake
Apple pie vs. apple
Fried egg vs. hard boiled
Soda vs. water
I kid you not!!! Dammit, I was fat, not dumb!!!

Oh bad Darla!!! I think every surgeon has his own guidelines which also makes you wonder. Sloan also recommended no regular coffee but I went back on that at 6 months (I am sorry I have to draw the line sonewhere) LOL My daughter has diet soda in the frig and I tell you I am having a little tonight, all I drink is water and crystal light tea and coffee I so need me some soda.
Well, I can ALMOST see different surgeons having different guidelines, but different guidelines from different people within the same practice?? Come on!!!!!
That being said, enjoy your little bit of soda. It probably won't taste as good as you remember!!! BTW, I think I forgot to share that over the holidays, I had several swigs of Suburban Club's Almond Smash soda - OMG! Heaven in a bottle!! Thank GOD Mom only gets that at Christmas!!!!!

I thought soda was a no no for life too. I did read somewhere on another website that carbonation will stretch your pouch. I have abstained until now but I just might have one soon. One problem I do have with diet coke is when I am drinking it I want to munch on salty snacks...pretzels, chips, popcorn...etc. So, I might just stay away.

If you're post-op, when did you first have alcohol after wls?
On Thanksgiving at 2 months I had a glass of wine, and On New year's Eve at3 months I had a bottle of the beer my cousin's husband brewed. I drank in sips, slowly over an hour.
Did your surgeon give you guidelines for alcohol consumption?
Yes. Dr. recommended avoiding any empty calories from simple carbs, including alcohol, and said that the calories in alcohol are 100% absorbed and so can prevent meeting goal weight if consumed frequently.
Did you notice a difference in its effects on you as opposed to pre-op?
I noticed I got a buzz, but I'm not sure whether it was due to my surgery malabsorption, smaller stomach, or just that I am a born again lightweight since I hardly ever drink anymore like I used to in my 20's
Are you able to drink a different amount now than pre-op?
I only wanted one just to be safe, so I don't know how much I could have drank. I'm sure i would be able to drink any amount, but I wouldn't want to because I would not like the after effects.
Optional - Have you transferred any food addictions to alcohol? A common issue after wls.
No addictions. Unless you count TV, phone calls, emailing & getting on the internet and logging into OH! I am addicted to staying connected to my people.

Glass of wine 1.3 years after surgery
Did your surgeon give you guidelines for alcohol consumption?
Honestly? I can't remember. Ditto.
Did you notice a difference in its effects on you as opposed to pre-op?
Get drunk very quickly. I had a beer and was buzzed for about 2 hours. Yikes
Are you able to drink a different amount now than pre-op?
MUCH less.
