ALCOHOL AFTER WLS

Okay, we've touched on this any number of times and some of you have been so unfortunate as to witness me drunk, either in person or on the phone!!!  LOL!!!  However, I think it's timely information, now that we have some pre-ops who may be wondering and some fairly new post-ops who want to test the waters:

If you're post-op, when did you first have alcohol after wls?

10 months - a margarita made with s/f mix.

Did your surgeon give you guidelines for alcohol consumption?

Honestly?  I can't remember.  Another DVR patient may be able to answer that.

Did you notice a difference in its effects on you as opposed to pre-op?

Holy cow!!!  I don't remember the first two hours after my first drink.  I get buzzed/drunk very easily now on a lot less.  The buzzes don't last long, potentially setting up a vicious cycle of drinking.

Are you able to drink a different amount now than pre-op?

MUCH less.

Optional - Have you transferred any food addictions to alcohol?  A common issue after wls.

Nope.  Still have food addictions.

Thanks!!!

Tia

I had my surgery March 22, 2004.   My first 'drink' after that was in October at a wine tasting at a winery in NC.   OMG, I was blotto in no time and it wasn't as if they were overly generous in pouring.  After that, I was back to the the next answer.

Did your surgeon give you guidelines for alcohol consumption?
I signed an agreement with my surgeon that had a number of rules/dictates.  One of those was no alcohol for at least one year.   With the exception of my wine tasting experience in the first answer, I stuck to the one year rule.   Dr Sofronski reminded us on a regular basis that alcohol is 'empty' calories!!!!  They were empty when I weighed almost 300 pounds and they are equally empty now.

Did you notice a difference in its effects on you as opposed to pre-op?
Takes almost no time (a few sips) for a quick buzz.   When I do drink I tend to stick to wine, though I have tested the water with margaritas on occasion, and if at an event (crab feast, etc) with draft beer in pitchers, I might drink beer..

Are you able to drink a different amount now than pre-op?
I do definitely drink less, but more because I don't like the feeling of being out of control when I overconsume.

Optional - Have you transferred any food addictions to alcohol?  A common issue after wls.
I don't know that I have transferred the food addiction to alcohol, but I did find the out to dinner weekend wine drinking becoming a have wine in the house to have a glass (or two) of wine each evening when I got home.   As I said earlier, they are empty calories and I've gained more than a few pounds, so I'm cutting back on the weekday drinking for the calorie count as well as my health.

I know that pre-op I had liver issues and I don't need to add to them with excess alcohol consumption!!!

Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

I have actually never drank. Okay maybe ONCE when I was a bad ole teen but never again since then. I am goofy enough I dont need alcohol to amplify that. LOL

Did your surgeon give you guidelines for alcohol consumption?
Yes he said if I drank I would be the "Cheapest date in the bar!" LOL He said it will go through you fast and that is not good due to poisoning. One of my husbands co workers died after bypass because she was drinking too much. She died of alchohol poisoning. SO if I did drink I would have been in classes before my surgery LOL

Did you notice a difference in its effects on you as opposed to pre-op?
I dont drink BUT I do notice a difference with my coffee now. It goes RIGHT THROUGH ME!

Are you able to drink a different amount now than pre-op?
I drin**** tea mostly and I can drink as I normally did before surgery. No more small sips for me. LOL The coffee I sip and take my time with LOL

Optional - Have you transferred any food addictions to alcohol?  A common issue after wls.
No! But I have developed a strange anorexia almost. I mean I was tolerating all kinds of foods and then all of a sudden my brain started getting all goofy on me. I was afraid to swallow ANYTHING! I still without thinking will put something in my mouth and then spit it out so I dont swallow it. And this is expensive stuff like shrimp and crab. I have to attend a seminar this month and I am hoping they can help. PHEW! I need something. LOL

All in all I am doing okay. I just dont like to eat AT ALL! I never get hungry so I dont eat and thats not  good! So I have to work on that. I knew when Mike went back to work I would starve during the day. hahahahahaha

What great information! Thanks Tia.  I've been wondering these questions myself. I had a few sips of a frozen margarita on Saturday. Thankfully not enough to get a buzz, but have wondered how others react.

Hopefully others will reply also.

~hugs~

If you're post-op, when did you first have alcohol after wls?

6 months, wine

Did your surgeon give you guidelines for alcohol consumption?

I beleive they didn't reccomend it, I do remember no soda for life, I should get my books out

Did you notice a difference in its effects on you as opposed to pre-op?

Yes, cheap date here...LOL but like you said it wears off quicker.  I went to a wedding and got drunk and sober twice in one night.  I can't do the fruity frozen drinks but I can drink wine and vodka & cranberry juice

Are you able to drink a different amount now than pre-op?

Way less.

Optional - Have you transferred any food addictions to alcohol?  A common issue after wls.

LIFE AFTER SURGERY   Can I drink carbonated beverages after surgery?   For the first six months post-operation, it is advised not to use carbonated beverages. Some patients try carbonation after six months and it still gives them a problem such as feeling uncomfortable from the gas produced. Some patients are able to drink sugar free carbonated beverages. However, it is recommended not to drink any beverages thirty minutes prior to eating a meal and thirty minutes after eating a meal.   Hey Steph -

Check this out on soda, taken directly from DVR's website!!!  When you said no soda for life, I thought, "I never heard THAT!"  Not that I drink much anyway, but still......

Coke Zero!!!  YUM!!!  On the rare occasions that I drink soda, I have to have THAT!!!  They also make a Sprite Zero and a Fanta Orange Zero!!!  Enjoy!!!  Just little sips, since you're not used to carbonation!!!

Also, THIS is the ONLY thing that ticks me off about DVR's staff/office.  We've all, at one time or another, gotten conflicting guidelines and information.  Like me being told that I wouldn't want sweets nor would I be able to eat them again!!  Yeah, right!!!  I wish.  And, when I was about two months post-op, I was given the green light to have salads, raw veggies and fruit.  Conversely, when I told someone at a support group meeting that, she said, "I was told not for 6 months!"  Of course, I said, "Well, did you have any problems, etc.?" and she said no, so I don't understand the difference.

Oh, well!!  Have a soda for me!!!  And while you're at it, throw a whupping Darla's way - she drinks full sugared soda!!!!!!!!!  Bad Darla!!!!!  LOL!!!
