First, I'd like to thank you all for sharing your journeys with me.  I have gained tremendous insight from you and feel like I already know a bit about each of you.  Soooo,  I thought it was time I introduced myself.   I am in the pre-approval phase for a lap band and anticipate a late January surgery date.  I live in Maryland, am married with the kids grown and gone for the most part.    I love to cycle and enjoy long distance riding.  More proof that you can exercise and still be overweight.  Does anyone else out there love to ride?
Thanks again for sharing.  I have probably learned more here than anywhere else. I look forward to joining the group officially.

Welcome to the Md Board! I am not big on cycling only because of my knees. They click as I pedal and it drives me nuts. I like the idea of cycling and wish I could do it. Best wishes to you on your journey to achieving your best life!

Welcome aboard!

Good luck with your journey!

I used to love riding bicycles until I got my first pair of hearing aids.  I was born hearing impaired.  When I rode the bicycle for the first time wearing hearing aids, I was scared out of mind of all the road noise.  Never got on a bike since then.

However, today, I happened to drive through the BWI airport loop and it appeared that they had a nice bike trail - when I saw a family biking through there, and I got to thinking, well, that's really off the road and away from the vehicular traffic, I was thinking maybe I'd give it some thought.

I think we have an avid biker on our boards, VeloEllen?  Isn't that you?

You are right about the trail that loops around BWI- It is about 14 miles total.  It also connects with the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail which is 13miles and goes all the way to Annapolis.  Both are paved and pretty low traffic. There is also a rail trail near ****eysvill that is wonderful.  it actually goes all the way to PA- Let me know if you give it a try.

I'd love to hear from VEloEleen.  I have some cyckig specific questions.

Thaks again!

I've actually done the NCR trail from ****eysville to the PA line.....i think its about 40 miles round-trip.  There is a cute little restaurant at the PA line that we ate at and then headed back.....best part about the way back from PA is that its mostly downhill so lots of coasting!

I'm not an AVID biker  by any means but I do enjoy riding....I've always wanted to try the BWI trail.

VeloEllen here.
i rode before I lost weight but definitely feel better riding minus 75 lbs.  We did the Civil War Century this year (did the metric) - I would have never done a hilly ride in my fat phase.  Also ride the NCR trail, the B & A trail, the airport loop etc.  Always looking for others to ride with!
I really need to buckle down and lose this last 30ish lbs. I need to lose!
Who is your surgeon?
You'll enjoy the girls and guys here - WELCOME!
Peace

Hi Ellen,
My surgeon is David Von Rueden.
It sounds like we ride some of the same events.  I actually did bikevirgina ride last year.  Five days of major hills, and a lung on two left on the side of the rode.  I want to do it again this year and hope to have enough weight off to see a difference.
I have a ton of questions regarding cycling after banding. How long did it take you after surgery before you were able to ride again? How do you handle nutrition on long rides like the metric...
Same for hydration?
I  live in Southern Maryland.  If you eveer want to meet for aride let me know.
Thanks again.  You are the only other cyclist I've found so far who has any experience with WLS.

I've only had 2 fills so my band is not too tight.  I was back at the gym on the exercise bike 10 days after my surgery.  I did my first outside organized ride (ride for autism) in april.  Do you ride Seagull Century - we do that ride yearly too.
I ride and drink like I normally would on my rides - I like Propel so that my drink of choice - or the new zero gatorade like drinks - watered down though.  I also do power bars for "food".

I've never done bike virginia - did CAM for many years though.  There are some nice rides in Southern MD - I'd love to ride!

Peace
E
