i'm intrigued by the product recommended below.. from the dentist. that sounds like it's worth a try!!
April,
I am sorry about the issues you are having. The gas problem can get horrendous when we have more carbs and turkey, chicken in our system. But complex carbs should really get you that way. Have you tried cleaning your system out? As for the haletosis you might have to go see a dentist it might not be from the surgery. Periodontal disease can be the problem if nothing else has helped you.
I hope everything goes back to normal for you soon since you deserve to be happy.
((((((hugs)))))))

April, I work for a dentist and you should ask your dentist or even your primary doc for a prescription called Peridex. It's a periodontal mouthwash. We use it in cases of extreme bad breath or for patients that can't seem to brush well. As far as thr gas I have no idea, I'm presurgery so I haven't been there yet. Best wishes to you though.

Candie,
Your time fast approaches. This is such an incredible journey. I don't regret a moment of it. Actually, I do have one regret. I wish I had done this years ago. So many years have been wasted not functioning at full throttle. Now it's full steam ahead.
Thanks for the tip on Peridex. I will ask the dentist or doctor (whichever I go to first) about it.
Take care and best wishes for a complication free surgery and recovery.

After having a WLS with a malabsorptive component, simple carbohydrates cause us to have gas. Complex carbohydrates cause gas too, but not nearly as bad as the simple carbs. You said you had increased the carbs, so i think it's likely this is causing your problem. What do the Dr. and nutritionist say?
If you have need for antibiotics, did they say it is because there is an overgrowth of intestinal bacteria?
I agree with taking the probiotics(acidophulis etc) to help alleviate the odor from the gas and lessen the gas on a regular basis. I've been taking probiotics since right before surgery and it has been doing a great job in keeping this under control if I do eat simple carbs, like at Thanksgiving. Otherwise my carbs are below 50g/day.
The breath thing may be ketosis but if your weight is stable than you wouldn't be in ketosis, so i would ask your doc and your dentist about the breath. I wish you luck and I'm sorry you are going through this.

Jennifer,
You are doing great. Keep up the good work.
I was almost afraid that I was taking too much probiotics, along with the supplements.
My surgeon put me on the antibiotics and my nut told me to watch the sugar alcohols.
I started on an intestinal gas preventative today (made by Digestive Advantage). So far, so good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Also, tomorrow I plan to do breakfast, lunch and evening snack with protein drinks and watch my carbs with dinner. I don't think I can do nothing but liquids right now. I really do have to get away from the sugars though.
As for the number of carbs I should have in a day, I have never gotten a straight answer on that question. My nut always said to concentrate on the protein.
I have to re-educate myself as to simple and complex carbs and formulate a plan that works for me.
Thanks for answering.
