I am trying to decide if teaching would be right for me. I am currently a mechanical engineer and would try to become a high school math teacher. can anyone give me advice? or know someone who I could talk to, especially if they are like me, changing careers? Thanks.

I am in your same  boat I am seriously considering chanig careers also. Check out the teaching residency/fellow programs. I have been invited to take part in interviews for P.G. County fellow program and also Baltimore City. I want to teach either special education in PG County or either Elementary Education in Baltimore City. However, I do know if your degree is not already in education you have to take the Praxis exam. If you are interest I can email you the info they sent me so you can look over it..

As an educator...here is my best advice...

It is not about knowing your content as much as it is knowing how to teach....how to deal with students....red-tape....etc....

welcome to the world of education....not the real world...not reality...

Nicole, I changed careers 10 years ago and it was the best thing I could've done.  Loving your job is a great thing.  I know there are a lot of Master of Arts in teaching programs for people who have a bachelors degree in another discipline.  For people who do not have a BS or BA, but who work full time, there are online programs and University of MD University college programs available at several satellite campuses around MD.  Towson University may be a good place to look.  I encourage you to follow your passion and go for it!
