Anyone Else Have This Happen

I am scheduled for surgery December 16.  I went to my PCP today for the pre-op work.  When the nurse took my BP it was, as she put it, "Sky High."  It was 174/120.  I did not feel bad, took my meds this morning, could not figure why it was so high.  Anyway, Dr. comes in and he looks at chart and immediately takes pressure again.  Still pretty high, 160/110.  So he takes me off the med I have been on and puts me on two others.  I had been on the Hyzaar for more than 10 years.  New med is called Azor and .  So then he proceeds to tell me he can not release me for surgery with my BP so high.  He wants me to take the new med and come back to see him in a week.  I can not for the life of me figure out what was wrong today.  Anyone else have any problems with blood pressure as you got closer to surgery and did it correct itself?  Thanks for your input, one and all.

Terri,

The closer I got to surgery the higher my bp was...on meds.  I believe it had something to do with having so much to get done before surgery and not having enough time to do it, along with the anxiety of the upcoming surgery.  I would talk to your surgeon about your BP.  I mean really, one of the "side effects" of having the surgery is a lowering of your BP and hopefully getting off meds permanently..not being on more.  Mine was really high even the day of surgery and it didn't stop mine from happening.

Again, talk to your surgeon and good luck!

Mine was very high leading up to my surgery and my PCP and surgeon never once mentioned cancellation! I would definitely call your surgeon. I feel like it is not right for your PCP to cancel surgery... doesn't he realize that this surgery will help your BP!?! I would complain until he approves you! Good Luck!

I think your PCP is out of line.  I thought he physical is supposed to be just to examine you and then send results to the surgeon, and the surgeon then determines whether to go forward after seeing your labwork, BP, absence of fever, etc.  Let us know what your surgeon says once the physical results are reviewed.  Maybe the surgeon and the PCP can do a phone consult if the PCP has to "release" you and holds the power right now.
Also, if your BP is that high, I would hope they would leave you alone in a quiet room to relax and deep beathe before taking the reading again to get an accurate reading.  If it remains high, I would ask what the risks are if you go into surgery.  I would think that the surgical team could give you additional BP meds before and during surgery if needed to keep you at a safe level.
My BP shot up to astronomical heights when i was in recovery and they had me take a 2nd and 3rd med to stabilize it.  By the time I went home, it had gone back down and i was only on my one regular BP med.  I'm pulling for you!
