Vitamin Intake
I know that once you get WLS vitamin intake is very important. I have some questions on that, that I hope someone can answer. Is there a certain type of pill (gelcap, tablet, etc) that works better after an RNY? Is there a limit to how many pills you can take at once (how many will fit in the pouch)?
I ask this, because I have a condition where my body does not absorb calcium. I have to take prescription drugs, as well as, calcium and vitamin D. I have a concern about being able to get all of my meds in after surgery.
Anyone have any experience with this?

My 2 cents... HTH
When I first had the surgery- I had a lot of intolerance issues-but not with the vitamins---I took chewable/liquid vits and calcium then and have very slowly tried introducing tablets over time. While I used liquid tylenol at first, I now I take rapid release caps from Tylenol as I can never be sure the hard tablets or capsules of anything actually break down and get absorbed. I take chewable vitamins usually too for the same reason. I got some hard capsule vitamins and I alternate between them and chewables every other day. I have IBS-D so my pills might come out whole at times if I am having an "episode" of D.
Pill limit? Depends on size of pills I guess. I take about 8 pills each morning---most are small rx pills and larger ones are vitamins. I heard not to take multi vitamin with the calcium supplements so I take MV in the AM- then half my calcium citrate mid day and the other half in the evening. I also am currently on a rx vitamin D supplement I take once a week. I had low vit D even before the RNY in 1/06.

When I first had surgery I took liquid centrum and liquid calcium then I switched to chewables. After 4 months post op I took pills I took centrum chewables. You just devide your meds during the day you do not have to take them all at once.
I buy over the counter multivitamins, calcium citrate and vitamin D and I am doing great. But of course everyone is not the same. maybe since you already have a problem with absorbing you can stick with liquid or chewables.
Good luck!

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

I just bought some new vitamins that my nut recommended, called Nutrametrix (or Nutrametrics, not sure of spelling).
It is a tiny capfull of powder that you mix in 2 oz of water. It is isotonic, so our bodies absorb 90-99% of the vits, whereas with pills/chewables, we only absorb 20%. My nut told me that I'd be able to give up my other supplements if I started taking this.
I got it at my support group meeting (they had reps there) but you can also buy online. They also had samples there to try before we bought. It was citrusy and not too bad. All of the other chewables/liquids I've tried were nasty.
They also have other vits like Calcium, antioxidants, etc. I didn't buy any of those yet, but I may. They all work the same way with the powder and water.

all of my vitamins are chewables from bariatric advantage. however, when i first had my surgery, i was also on a vitamin d supplement that was taken in pill form. however, the pill was very small, so i had no problems getting it down.
