Thank you so much Darla, and thanks Lauren for your good wishes. Sorry that I made you wait Darla! I almost didn't go to GBMC for support group because my head was so up in the clouds. In spite for being long overdue, this all came about very fast, so I didn't even have time to breath on it myself. But, I did got to support group, and stopped to pick up a few things at Giant on my way home.
I'll try to make a long story a bit shorter, if possible. You all know I'm wordy, lol.
I've worked for this company for a little over 4 years. I started out full-time, then went to part-time when another (higher paying) job came about. I recently decided for several reasons that I wanted to go back full-time. I needed to make more money to make that work. I have an extensive background in retail, so I decided to toot my own horn and ask for a promotion. I expected to be promoted to the lowest level of manager, to get my foot in the door.
I was promised consideration, but then after I gave notice to my other job, and started working full-time again I find out that another associate was interested in management as well. He is not qualified, and doesn't perform at the level I do. But, anyone who has worked in retail knows, it's a good-ole-boys club sometimes. Fast forward to this past Thursday. I had basically said I wanted a good career move, or I was going to start aggressively looking for another job. I got a bit of a run around, and left the conversation pretty angry. About an hour later, my store manager comes and asks if I would consider going to the White Marsh store (I work in Towson). Our former 2nd in command at Towson is now the store manager at White Marsh, and when he heard that I was now working full-time, and interested in a career position, he specifically requested I be promoted up 3 levels, instead of 1, and moved to his store. WOW! They still needed to run this by our district manager. Towson store manager was away all weekend, so I knew I'd have to wait till at least Monday to find out if anything was to come of this.
Monday I found out our district was coming to meet with me today, Wednesday. So, 2 days (both of which I worked at my part-time job at night, making them 15 hour days) to learn as much as possible about the proposed new position so I didn't sound stoopid asking for it, lol. He was supposed to be first thing this AM, but didn't come in till lunch time. Instead of just meeting with him, I had to meet with him, and BOTH store managers. I thought I'd be a little intimidated, but I really wasn't. I was told by my NEW store manager that I aced it, and I was offered the position about 15 minutes later. Things moved FAST.
I start my field training at the Westminster location on Monday for 2 weeks. I do understand why they are moving fast. The holiday season is fast upon us, and they want me as up to speed as possible and ready for the season.
I thought I wanted to get out of retail, and perhaps someday I will want to again. But, for now, I'm just feeling good about being recognized for a job well done. In some days, I can thank WLS for this. I have the confidence to interview and put my best foot forward, and I have the energy to do a good job at a very physical job.
In other good news, the scale is finally moving slightly again after a 6 week stall. Phew!
