Stomach Ulcers

So, on monday I had my Upper Endoscopy done, and all I have been told so far is that I have a ton of stomach ulcers.  I see my GI again on the 17th, and will find out more then.  He did tell me to stop taking my presciption of 800mg Motrin, and not to take any kind of ibuprofen or asprin.  Oh and he wants me to take the Prevacid twice a day.  Now, I saw my PCP today, and was telling her what they found, and she says that I can't have my surgery till they are healed.  She also said to not take the Prevacid and gave me a script for Zantac, and she also gave me a different kind of pain medication, Ultram.

Did anyone have this problem before surgery, and if so what treatment were you given to heal them?  Oh and how long did it take to heal them?  Also, has anyone every used Ultram to help with pain?

I did get good news today, I have lost 2 more pounds.  That brings me to 10 pounds gone, and only 9 more to go until I'm out of the 300's!  WooHoo!

Hi there,

I dealt with a peptic ulcer years ago. But before my surgery nothing so I didn't need to get treated for that.  After my surgery I was dealing with some symptoms that my surgeon believed I was developing one. I was continued on prevacid and they added carafate and everything was perfect after that.

One thing I would do is follow the GI doctor's advice with the prevacid. They specialize in that field and prevacid is a great medicine. If your insurance pays for it you should have it.

Good luck with everything and I hope everything clears up soon for you.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Hiya hon!  They gave you Ultram for pain because most everything else beside tylenol is an NSAID.  NSAIDs are notorious for ripping your stomach apart if taken over lengths of time.  After you have surgery, you are to never have NSAIDs again.  This is why I'm having so much trouble with my knee and the pain there because I can't have any anti-inflammatories and tylenol doesn't even touch the pain.  I was prescribed Ultram and it is along the same lines as Tylenol but a lot stronger.  I've not filled my prescription for Ultram because it is technically a narcotic.  It doesn't really deal with the pain, it only masks it.  At least that's what my orthopedist told me.

Thank you for all of your advice it is very helpful.  I am going to ask my GI about the Carafate.  I want to get these healed so they have no reason not to do this sugery.

Aaron thank you for sharing your experience with Ultram.  I have severe pain in my left leg from a car accident I was involved in 5 years ago.  I had broke both bones in my lower left leg and my ankle was partially crushed.  They put a plate and 18 screws in my leg, and then I ended up with Compartment Syndrome.  To make a long story short, I had a total of 7 surgeries on that leg, and now have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy in it due to all of the nerve damage.  I was on narcotics for such a long time, and I finally took myself off of them.  That was 3 years ago, and thats when I started taking 800mg Motrin 6 of them a day.  WOW, no wonder my stomach is a mess lol.  My GI suggested Tylenol and I laughed at him and said Motrin didn't even help my pain completely Tylenol isn't going to do anything.  As for the Ultram it's only been a few days, but I think you are correct, it only masks the pain.  I've been thinking about getting another nerve block done, but I will give this a chance to help.  If you ever hear of any pain med that does more then mask the pain please let me know.

Once again thank you!
