Hi guys, I need some advise.  I meet with my surgeon on October 22nd for my first visit, I have MDIPA (United Health Care) for insurance, which is HMO.  My insurance requires me to get referrals to go to any specialist  for test.  I was wondering should I call the surgeon and get all the names of all the test my insurance requires me to take and get them all done before I meet with him on the 22nd.  Or should I just wait, I want to speed this process up I want to have all my document ion in and hopfully get approved for surgery before Christmas.  I am getting the band surgery, anyone out there live near or around Upper Marlboro, MD

Just my thoughts, but they probably will tell you, "The doctor/nurse will discuss all necessary tests at your first consult," which is what they did with me - I walked out of there with a laundry list of things that needed to be done.  However, you MIGHT want to call them and see what surgery dates they're scheduling for.  They may be already into next year.

I know it's hard, but be patient.  Everything will fall into place.

Take care,

Tia

Well I guess I will have to see if my insurance will even approve me first

Well, obviously, your surgeon's office will be the ones to submit/seek approval on your behalf.  However, if you don't already know, you could call your insurance company yourself and find out if ANY type of wls is covered.  After that, let the surgeon's office get the ball rolling.  That doesn't mean you need to be passive in your journey, though.  Make sure that whenever you speak with someone, you document the who, what, where.  You may not need it, your approval may be effortless, but better to have the info and not need it than the reverse!

Good luck!

I started the process in June and I have one  more test to have done, an upper endoscopy tomorrow actually, and then waiting for my office notes from PCP before it is even submitted to insurance.  I am thinking it is not going to happen this year for me either.
