i'm having a strange relationship with chicken. sometimes it doesn't bother me at all. sometimes i barf it about a half hour after i eat it. i don't eat it that often, but it's hard to completely avoid because my husband makes it for dinner a lot.
anyway... about the barfing thing... i have noticed that if i start feeling like i may need to barf, my nose starts running badly. this was never the case pre-surgery. interestingly, i don't get that dry mouth, with the beads of water feeling that i used to get whenever i felt like i was going to barf. i just find it odd that this has all changed. does anyone know what i'm talking about/experienced the same thing?

Hi Pamela,
When the food get stuck you get that runny nose pressure in the middle of your chest, and you have to get rid of the offending food.
I used to get a lot early out from surgery. I rarely get that now but it can happen if I am not careful when I am eating. Ex: eating to fast or not chewing it well enough.
Yup I know exactly what you are experiencing.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

Every once in a while some white meat chicken or beef steak gets stuck or at least doen't seem to move down and I have to barf it up. I get the nose thing too but mine can also get very clogged and I sneeze if my stomach full or overly full of food. The clogged nose and sneezing goes away almost immediately after I bring up the offending food.

Yes, I get the runny nose. A lot of times, I also suddenly get the intense urge to poop. (Sorry, TMI!)
It is different from "sick" throwing up, in that, I know that I am going to have to puke, and have time to get whatever I am going to throw up in ready and then I do it. When I'm sick, I have no control. I also can throw up whenever I want now (well, at least if I have eaten). All I have to do is start gagging and I'll eventually vomit. That trick would have come in very handy when I was in school and trying to get out of it!

Hi Pamela,
I am just about 4 1/2 years out and still have an uneasy relationship with most dense proteins. My rule of thumb is .. if it moo'd, oinked or clucked in a previous life .. I just might have a problem. The good news is .. I've never been sick on crab or shrimp .. lol. I don't always get sick, but I never seem to know when it will happen. I refer to the feeling I get as an elephont standing on my chest.
The nose running thing is sort of funny. The runny nose (or sometimes a burp or hiccup) tells me I have had enough to eat and I am FULL!!!
If I need to barf, as soon as I get to the appropriate place (and sometimes not ... uhoh .. can you say make sure I have a bag with me in the car/truck ) I don't need to prompt myself at all, it just comes up. It's not 'unpleasant' like being sick to your stomach, but it's hard to explain. Once the offending stuff comes up/out I'm usually set to go and feel better immediately.
Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!
If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished. Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago. I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits! Wherever you are in your journey ... It's ALL good!!!
Pam:
That's so weird. I get the runny nose thing too. I thought it was my sinuses, but my nose runs now more thatn it ever did. As far as the food getting stuck. I haven't had too any problems with chicken, but I find that dense red meat is never good. I usually can tell if it's not going to sit well after the first bite.

When we believe, all things are possible!
I have finally become a champion barfer. runny nose, yes.......an inordinate amount of saliva, yes.......when food gets stuck, it's like I'm trying to process a rock and it keep rolling around in there and I know it's gotta come out or I'll be miserable. Like Mo, when I am full I always hiccup. That tells me that i'm done and if I take another bite, I'm going to barf. Luckily when we barf, it's not really all that much LOL Also, like Lisa, I know from the first bite that if something is not going to sit well with me.......I just take it really slow and breathe a lot or just stop altogether and either barf it out or wait to see what it does.

i am so glad i started this thread! i know there is nothing unique about my surgery and experience, but it's still nice to read about others experiencing the same thing... especially those that experience problems with certain foods sporadically.
thanks for all the responses!
