Trying Different Protein Products
Is it a good idea to purchase and check out the protein shakes from some of the different places before you have surgery. I am not close as my paperwork has not gone to insurance yet, but it will be within the next month or so. I went on a couple of sites, unjury.com and bariaticeating.com. I ordered a couple of different packets to try before surgery time. There is a bariatric protein kit for 59.99 (sale price) at bariatriceating.com and I was wondering is this a good price to try out some of this stuff? I don't want to throw money away if someone else out there has tried some of these, and if they have some good insights. To any and all out there, could you please give me some advice and hints about it. I might be jumping the gun a bit, but I wanted some idea about how things will taste. I did not like the taste of some stuff at the group meeting on Wednesday so I am now wondering is there good tasting protein products out there? Thanks for all your assistance and I look foward to hearing from bunches of you.

Hi Terri -
Yes, it's a great idea to buy samples. Not sure what the $59.99 package includes, but I know most of the samples are MUCH cheaper!
I hope you don't mind, but I cut and pasted my response to someone else about protein, just to save time. There are tons of different protein products out there; it's just a matter of finding one you can live with. Be forewarned that your sense of taste and smell may change after wls. Some of the samples I ordered I loved pre-op, then not at all post-op. I can't handle a protein powder that's gritty, smells or is foamy when mixed up. For me, I found the best ones to be the clear, fruit flavored Isopure (check GNC and when I was there, the GBMC pharmacy carried them, too), and the other is the EAS Advant Edge. The Chocolate Fudge tasted like Yoo-Hoo, in a weird, bariatric way, and I sometimes use the French Vanilla as a creamer in my chai tea or coffee. The thing I liked the best about the EAS is that they were thin - not gaggingly thick like some others. Again, unfortunately, it comes down to what you can tolerate post-op. Check out www.vitalady.com, too, for samples.
Also, if you don't have one, you might want to invest in a blender or a Magic Bullet to mix your shakes and puree whatever food you'll be able to eat on the soft foods stage.
Hope this helps. If you need anything else, let me know!!
Hugs,
Tia

Good morning !
Just to reinforce what Tia said, tastes DEFINITELY change after WLS though eventually they come back.
I am 4 1/2 years post op and still use protein supplements daily. I don't spend a lot of $$$ on my protein. I just buy the EAS powder (in a big bag) at Sam's club. They have a vanilla and a chocolate. It is 100% whey (which is better than soy or so it is said) protein. I make a daily shake with instant decaf coffee, a shot of DaVinci SF syrup, some powdered coffee creamer and Equal. I just shake it in a container to keep the foamy-ness to a minimum, pour it into my travel mug and off I go in the a.m.
Not sure how long you will be using protein supplements (my doctor mandates two a day for LIFE .. tho I barely get the one ). A lot of folks complain about the taste/smell/etc. I know that some of them are nasty but once you find something you can tolerate you may just have to grin and bear it because it's something you HAVE to have .
My other suggestion is to start with the protein supplements once or twice a day now to build up your body resources. It really helps with the post op recovery if your body has protein stored up!
Best wishes as your WLS journey continues.

Comparison is the thief of joy!
If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished. Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago. I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits! Wherever you are in your journey ... It's ALL good!!!
For me, I tried Unjury and EAS only. I only drink the chocolate shakes....not sure why, but they are the only ones I can drink with out feeling like I'm going to .....As for the EAS shakes, I buy those already made shakes and keep them in my refrigerator incase I have grab one on the go...and of course they are chocolate too.

Teresa,
I swear the only ones I can stomach are the EAS pre-made and the AchievOne Cappicino.
I have of each of them everyday. I agree - build those stores up before surgery. Oh but remember that most people notice a huge taste change after the surgery- so just be careful buying too much of anything.

Thanks for the info. I am not going to buy alot because everyone has said that your taste changes. I have tried some protein bars and the ones I bought had 20g in them. But even though they only had 2g sugar, they had 6% sugar alcohol.

I will say what has been said a few times, you will not believe just how much your tastes will change! Can you believe that I actually am not too crazy about chocolate? It is true:) Just purchase small amounts. Maybe even unflavored Unjury and add it to things that you like after surgery. My very best to you! Life is wonderful!
Thanks much. I did order some unflavored from Unjury and some chicken soup and since I am a chocolate fiend, I ordered Chocolate. I know every says that their taste changes can you put a definition to that, in otherwords, Do you get a strange taste, etc. Hope everyone is fairing well in this stormy weather. Right now in Waldorf it is not pounding rain but rather steady.
