Greek Yogurt

Hey Guys.  After reading so much about everyone's favorite greek yogurt, I've been looking into it and reading my labels.  I was surprised to read that the sugar count was 16g of sugars for a flavored and 9g of sugar for the regular stuff.  I thought this was supposed to be good for you.  Haven't bought any yet, just preparing for after surgery and looking to replace  my favorite Danon Light and Fit with all that new added sugar.  The brands I was looking at were Fage and something greek sounding that started with oik...  let me know what you think......  Thanks C

I actually bought this for the first time today and am pleased with it.
I bought the FAGE with honey on the side.  I passed up most of the fruit flavored FAGE because there was added sugar.  You need to really look at the labels... don't judge sugar just by the grams listed - - also look at the ingredients to see if it is natural ocurring or added sugar.  This honey flavored yogurt was 29g, but it was all natural sugars in it's own compartment so I could control how much of it I took.    The fruit flavored FAGEs had white sugar added in, so the sugar grams may have been less than the honey flavored but it is a sugar I choose not to eat.

The plain Chobani yogurt has 7g of 'sugar' but it is the naturally ocurring lactose from the milk... a glass of skim milk has 12g of 'sugar'.  The ingredients list confirms that nothing has been added.

I used this plain sugar on a potato for dinner and liked it as a sour cream substitute!
30g of s.cream has 1g sugar, 1g protein, 5g fat, 60 calories
30g of the greek yogurt has 1g sugar, 3g protein, 0 fat, 17calories

Hey neighbor!  I can smell Schmidt's from here!  lol  Check out this website, it will explain why the carbs/sugars are okay in yogurt.  Yogurt IS the exception....

I use Oikos plain greek yogurt (the only brand I can get here).......it does have 9 grams of sugar in it which is under my sugar/sugar alcohol limit......and it is a natural sugar (not added) so that's alright too.  Not to mention it is a protein powerhouse!  I mix kashi GoLean in it for an even more protein kick (13 grams of it per serving) so in one meal I'm getting over 30 grams of protein.  Cool huh?

Aaron,

I live in Hagerstown and you can get Fage (which I think is better) at Martin's on Halfway Blvd.  It is only in the organic section.  Try it...I think you will like it.

Nope they don't have it...I tried there as that Martin's is closer to my home also.   They have a large organic section on Halfway Blvd...and not on the Dual.  Jsut trying to save you the trip.  In any event...enjoy the yogurt and let me know if you like the Fage.

thanks aaron because i had the same experience as the thread starter.  my nutritionist doesn't want me eating over 9 grams of ANY sugar begardless of whether it's naturally occuring or not.
