Just wondering how long the surgery for RNY is?  How long will I be in the operating room?  Don't think I've heard anybody say this.

Thanks, guess like with any surgery it varies between patient and doctor performing.

I know for mine, I was in there almost 5 hours because...well I'm not sure why.  I do know that they were trying to decide whether to do an open procedure or laparoscopically.  I have an extra incision.  I had such a high weight that they really couldn't tell anything until they got in there LOL  Luckily my liver had shrunk enough for it to make it easy for them to do it laparoscopically.  My parents were so scared along with everyone at the office because I went in for surgery at I think it was 8:30 am and I didn't come out until after noon.

I was 5 hrs., But that was because he determined my gall bladder needed to come out once he got in there.

ya know......I have gall stones but they decided not to take out my gall bladder since it wasn't giving me any discomfort.

Wow!!  5 hours??!!!  That is a LOOONNGGG time.  Guess it don't matter much to me since I'll be out cold, but for someone waiting in the waiting room that is a long time.

I've already had my gallblader out so I already have a couple holes in me, hope that doesn't cause any problems.

What is this drain thing they talk about?  And say how disgusting it is.

I'm not sure of the function of the drain.  I never had one.....but I guess with some people they get sent home with a drain still in them and they either have to empty it or record what comes out?  I dunno LOL  from what people have told me, it's kinda gross!

Hi Christy,

I was in the operating room around 2 hours and spent around 4 hours in recovery before being moved to a room.

I am really happy that you have a date. Don't overthink the operation part of it. Like you said you'll be asleep anyway.

My RNY took almost 3 hours because my surgeon got some surprises when she got in there. She ended up having to stitch part of my small bowel because it was thinning and fix a lot of adhesions.
