Liquid Diet?

Did everyone have to do a liquid diet. Why does some Doctors have some people do it but not others?

My doctor had me do a liquid diet prior to surgery to reduce the size of my liver. If you have a large fatty liver then it would make it hard for the surgeon to move around in there because they actually have to lift your liver to get to your stomach. If they can't do that then most likely they will do an open procedure which is what most patients want to avoid.

I have Dr. Singh also.  When I first went in for banding in February, I did the two week liquid.  It's purpose is to do what Aaron said... it will shrink your liver to help the doc do his job.  It will also help you get some weight off pre-op which will also be benefical to both of you.

When I couldn't get the band because of my cirrhosis, when I went in for the sleeve in May, I was told I didn't have to do the liquid but I did it for a week anyway.  Wanted to help Dr. Singh all I could with the liver problem.  I was able to have the sleeve with no major complications.

Follow what he says to do....it will make both of your jobs much easier.

I have to do a two week diet prior to surgery of 2 protein shakes a day then a protein only dinner. Then two days before I have to clear liquids.

My doctor explained to me it was to shrink the size of my liver, since most MO/SMO have a very fatty enlarged liver they want to shrink it prior to surgery to make surgery safer.

I did not with Dr. Moein.  All I had to do was have clear liquids 24 hours before surgery just to get my system cleared out. (Plus that stupid phosphosoda nastiness!)
