Am I doomed?

Hey everyone!

I've been having an issue lately and I know someone will be able to shed some light.  My work schedule is not typical at all.  I work 2 days from 5am-5pm and 2 nights from 5pm-5am and then I have 4 days off.  I have been spending my nights at work eating and eating and eating.  I pack a lunch, usually tuna, crackers, fruit, and 2 bottles of water to hold me for the 12 hour shift but lately I have been eating more and more and more and it's not the healthy stuff either!  I work as a paramedic and I tend to find myself venturing out between emergency calls and grabbing something not so healthy to eat, usually from 7-11, Royal Farms or ordering from a local take out.  I am trying to make good choices when I do grab something out but the problem I find is that since I am almost 6 months post op I am findling that my pouch can tolerate different foods now and I have been trying them.  Most of the time I am not hungry but I am bored so I eat junk.

Today for example, is what I have eaten so far

10:00 a.m. 1 piece of toast dipped in egg yolk, didn't eat any egg, and 3 forkfuls of homefries
3:00 p.m   About 5 bites of a chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, green pepper, olive, shredded cheddar cheese, wrap from Subway
5:30 p.m.  1 snack package of 100 calorie chocolate caramel chex mix
6:00 p.m.  1 stick of sharp cheddar cheese
8:00 p.m.  3 pieces of celery dipped in peanut butter
10:00 p.m.  5 bites of a spicy buffalo chicken wrap with lettuce and tomato

I have also been drinking water, propel and diet iced tea periodically throughout the day.  At this point 2:25 a.m. I am completely stuffed, and out of food, but I know if I had any sort of food in front of me, whether it be a snack, sandwich, whatever, I would eat it and I am not hungry!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What in the hell is wrong with me?  Boredom? Stupidity? A combination of both?

I really feel like I am ruining this great opportunity that I was given by having RNY.  I have lost 88 lbs so far but I feel like I am sabotaging myself, more and more daily.

I would appreciate any help anyone could provide, any insight from anyone who has been through the same thing!

Lisa,

I know it can be hard.  I work 3 12 hour shifts.  7p-7a.  all 3 days are separated from each other.  On my work days I pack my meals.  I always have healthy meals and snacks.  I think part of your problem may be bordom.  On my work days, the only times I eat is while I am at work.  Also, I can not leave my work place for food and the cafeteria closes during the night.  So that is a benefit for me.  I know that has to be a hard thing for you.  I remember before surgery I always ate convienence foods.  They were my down fall and probably the down fall of many of us who have had the surgery.

I think it is just a matter of getting your head back into it.  Tomorrow is a new day and a new start.

I don't know if this is much help to you, just know we have been there pre and post op.  And, this is a great place for support.
Kim

Lisa, I have just one question for ya... what on there is so unhealthy? The closest thing to "junk" is the 100 calorie pack, and that isn't really junk in my mind.

Look at the quantities, compared to what you would have eaten 6 months ago?

Eating every 2.5-3 hours or so is quite normal. You really aren't off track, in my opinion.

The only thing that would worry me, would be eating if you are not hungry. If you aren't hungry and you are bored. That is the time for water, or a SF popcicle, or something else that isn't really many calories.

You're doing great! Don't sell yourself short.
Hugs!

Hi There Lisa,

I totally agree with Kathy's post to you!!

I am a SAHM  (I used to be a paramedic in NY I loved that job!) Anyway eating every two hours the way you are 5 bites here and there is nothign compared to eating like the way we did before. Everything you ate was great. Just remember to stay focus and when you do snack on something snack on protein....

Remember to always keep your protein intake high and your carb intake lower and you will do great!

S/f popsicles, celery with peanut butter, cheese sticks, protein bar and remember to drink lots of fluids!

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
Those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to give me some insight.  The more I read all of your posts the more I realize that what I am eating in no way compares to what I ate before.  It just feels like that all I do is eat, or graze.  I guess I really have to look at my choices in food and decide if what I am about to eat will benefit me, and if not, throw it away.

Boredom, I know, plays a huge part in it.  I tend to snack or graze when I have nothing else to do, no emergency calls, no paperwork, etc.  We have a gym at my station so what I really need to do is exercise, I really have no excuse not to.

I am going to put forth a good effort in preparing my foods beforehand and being conscious of what I am eating and not allow myself to get into the situation where I have to stop at 7-11, or Royal Farms to grab something.  It seems like its all in being proactive and preparation.

Thanks to everyone, I don't know what I do without all of you, you are all truly an inspiration to me!

Lisa -

You've been given some really great advice by everyone.  I think the only thing I could add would be to add some more fluids.  I know it's hard if you've got to head out quickly on a call, but for me at least, provided I've gotten my quota of protein and fluids in, I'm honestly NEVER hungry, even at 3 years post-op.   Any pangs that I feel are just head hunger, and I'm not sure anything COMPLETELY makes that go away.

It IS constantly a struggle, not the easy way out everyone seems to think, but you took the biggest step in deciding to have the surgery.  Now comes the hard part!!  And trust me, you're NOT alone, it's that way for everyone.

The good thing is that a lot of convenience stores, especially Royal Farms, carry a lot more healthy items - salads, wraps, hard boiled eggs, sushi (if you like that), etc., so it does make it SOMEWHAT easier that you don't HAVE to choose the Twinkies and Coke!!

If you'd like to chat more, please feel free to send me a PM.

88 pounds is great - and I bet you REALLY notice it when you're climbing in and out of the EMS vehicles!!!  What an accomplishment!!!

Hugs,

Tia
