Low iron level and supplements

I have taken Bariatric Advantage for my iron, calcium and vitamins since surgery.  Anyway, my recent bloodwork showed a very low iron level and I was prescribed Revista, a prescription iron.  I got it filled last night and OMG - the pills are HUGE!!!  Beyond HUGE.  Has anyone taken this before - any problems with swallowing them?  You cannot crush them.  Also anyone else with low iron problems and what did you do to help it.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Kendra!!!  Good to see you!!!

Sorry to hear about your iron levels - I went through that, too, due to a horrendous menstrual cycle which never seemed to end.  I ended up having an iron infusion, a blood transfusion, two D&C's and finally, a uterine ablation to get it to stop!!

The OTC iron supplements I take are Vitron-C, recommended by my surgeon; they have vitamin C in them to aid in absorption.

If the pills seem too big for you to swallow, just cut them up, you SHOULD be okay at this point.

Hope everything works out okay!!  Keep us posted.

Hugs,

Tia

I was borderline amenic on my last labs- no mentstral issues or known blood loss though- ---doc didn't say to up my iron intake but I got some samples of an Rx Revista  and they made me so nauseous even when taken with food.  So--  I just take a multi with iron and hope that keeps me near normal.  I can't tolerate spinach but I do like  liver and onions - but foods don't seem to have loads of iron so unless you eat them daily- so not sure the food iron amounts will help much.

Hey Kendra
Nancy has me taking Revista as well.  I have to cut it in half.  Somedays I can only get half down.  They are hard to swollow and I have had them stuck.  That is hell till you can bring it up.  The constipation is also hell BUT BUT BUT It works.
I would not crush that crap up.........OMG you will HATE it.

i can't answer the question, but my NUT did remind me yesterday that iron must be taken at least two hours after calcium because it prevents calcium from absorbing.
