Averbach & St. Agnes
I have selected Dr. Averbach as my physician to have WLS and I'm looking to hear from people who have used Dr. Averbach recently. Would like to hear how your RNY with him went, pros and cons and hear about your experience with St. Agnes. St. Agnes is supposed to be the center of excellence although I've heard a couple stories lately regarding care there and would like your experiences.

I have just had my initial consult with him but find him to be very professional and he will answer emails sent to him within hours of you sending them, and is very patient with the numerous questions I have for him. St. Agnes i have not been a patient at since 1976, when my second child was born...but they are doing a lot of renovating there and when I went to the auditiorum last week, everything seemed very clean....
I did not use Averbach but did have my surgery At St. Agnes in December. I have been a nurse for over 24 years and had no problems whatever with the care I received. And I've done it all in nursing - cath lab, Med Surg, ER, trauma, ICU - everything! Matter-of-fact, I found it to be among the best care I've ever received or witnessed.
Dr. Averbach is my surgeon except i had a VSG, not RNY. He is an exceptional doctor, very responsive and professional. I came from the hospital after 4 days..i was kept an additional day because i was not drinking enough fluids. After 3 days home, i started to run a slight fever...100.4 and the instructions said to call Dr. Averbach if ur temp went above 100, so i called him. I live, at least, an hour from St. Agnes, so he told me to go to the nearest emergency room. He was in phone contact with the emergency room staff and order tests to be done by them. It turned out all was negative except my white blood count. At the emergency room, at 3:00 AM, he was on the phone with me and told me he wanted me to be transferred to St. Agnes. All i knew was that i was tired and once the emergency room docs had given me an IV, my temp went down. I wanted to go home and sleep. Dr. Averbach made a deal with me. I could go home and call him (ON HIS PRIVATE CELL PHONE LINE) first thing in the morning to let him know what my temp was and how i was feeling. I said okay.
I went home and four hours later got a call from Dr. Averbach...he did not wait for me to call him. We went over what my temp was, how i was feeling and was i drinking fluids and holding them down, etc. DR. AVERBACH SPOKE TO ME EVERYDAY MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY, either him calling me or me calling him for the next 4 days.
THAT IS A GREAT DOCTOR and is what doctors used to do a long time ago. We were so impressed with him that my husband had a VSG 3 mths. later (6/08) with him, too.
As far as St. Agnes is concerned, it was an okay hospital.
