Did I Do The Right Thing?

So, now that I've had WLS, of course there are people that are interested in the topic and come to you for advice.  I have had several people at work question me about having the surgery and why I picked the specific surgery and my doctor, etc.  Before my surgery, I did my homework and decided what was best for me and the doctor that I felt comfortable with and took our insurance.  So, being the expert that I am (HA, HA) someone asked me if she should have lap band or gastric bypass and the only thing that I could tell her was to research it and see how she felt about each one.  She is concerned about the fills after lap band, and also is diabetic.  I don't want to put my 2 cents in, so I gave her the website address and urged her to take a look at both.  I also didn't want her to feel like she couldn't ask me, because I know what it feels like to be obese all my life and never see the end in sight.
Did I do the right thing?  Would you have done any different?

I personally think you handled just the right way!   You can tell someone your experience and why you chose to do something a particular way, but we are all different and have to do what we are comfortable with.   Share what you are comfortable sharing, and offering OH as a resource is also an awesome idea.   I spent a long time pouring over the whole OH site before I even made my decision to have WLS.

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

Mo:

Thanks for the comment.  I didn't want to shut her down from the idea, because I think it is a great one, but I also didn't want to make the decision for her.  It is a very personal thing.

Hey, on another note, I noticed your last name.  Does your husband have realtives down here?  Many people with the same last name.

There's a gal in our office here who has been interested in WLS and has watched my progress so to speak over the last 4 years since I moved to this job.   I was about 3 months out when I came to work down here.   She was really interested, and her husband told her NO.   He has since passed and over the last 2 years has gained even more weight.  She is now into I think about month 4 of the supervised, but I think still looking for reasons not to have WLS.  When she has come to me I have emphasized that she needs to do what she is comfortable with and has to be prepared for a major lifestyle change after if she is to be successful.

Nope, no relatives in MD or at least none with this name!!!   I have to admit tho we tried to pull that stunt at THE crab house in OC .. said .. oh .. isn't it free for with this name ??  They didn't fall for it !!!!

I could do the same with my maiden name, but doubt that they will go for it either.  Even though, I'm really a relative!  (LOL) so funny!

Lisa -

You absolutely did the right thing, no worries there.  It IS an intensely personal decision that she needs to come to herself.

Don't be surprised if she still has questions as she sees you shrinking, but at least you know she's truly interested, and not just truly nosy.

I get questioned all the time.  So and so told me that you had WLS and what did you have Lap band?  Then they want to know why you decided to have that surgery and how much did it cost and "can you eat now" and are you on a lot of meds.  I even had one vendor that I deal with say that he had spoken to our CEO and he told him how great I was looking and he had to make an appointment just to see me!!!!  Wow, didn't know I was that important (not)!

hey lisa! i think you were totally correct.....she needs to do the research herself. no one can tell her what she needs to do. she's gotta weigh out the pros and cons of it....more importantly she needs to find out if she even qualifies. you did good kiddo
