Just wondering ;  Never done it but with the cruise coming up wondering if I should so I don't get burned and ruin my whole trip.

Any input?

I have been wondering the same thing before my trip in October. I mentioned it to my dermatologist. He did not recommend I do this. Instead he suggested that I properly use sun protection products. I still have not decided if I will try to "get a base tan" anyway. It will be interesting to see what everyone else recommends.

SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!  Don't do it!!!

Two words - SKIN CANCER.  Talk to Teri Y. about that.  I also worked with a girl who worshipped outside in the summer and inside in the winter - she has a HUGE melanoma scar on her leg now.

I'm fair skinned and used to indulge in my share of outdoor and indoor tanning.  Unfortunately, since I AM so fair, it took forever for me to tan, and even in a tanning bed, you can burn.

My advice?  If you don't like the pasty white look, buy a good self-tanner (we'll be at Ulta on Saturday and they have LOTS!!!).  In addition, use a good sunscreen on the trip so you DON'T get burned.  Don't forget the nose, ears and lips, too!!!  When I was about 15, I got sun poisoning on my lips - I looked like two sets of Angelina Jolie's lips had been pasted on my face.

I will NOT debate this with you.  If I find out you're doing it, I will personally come and kick your butt.

Said with my normal amount of affection!!!

Good morning !   The self tanning things work .. but another suggestion is to get into the habit of using one of those moisturizering lotions/creams that have the skin 'enhancement' in them.   Does a double duty .. keeps your skin moisturized AND helps give you a bit a color as well!

I am fair as well, but tan easily.   I get most of my color just walking around and have to remember when I AM going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time to put a screen on ... I think I'm up to about a 45.   In my 20's I was one that would lay out with baby oil and iodine ... it's a wonder I'm not one giant melanoma now!!!!!

Sorry I am going to miss the adventure on Saturday but we already have a commitment.

Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

coming from someone who had 2nd degree burns on the shoulders and scalp from playing pool volleyball for an hour and a half in jamaica......I would cover myself from head to toe and not let the sun touch me ever again. by the time the BLOOD stopped running out of it, I looked like a burn patient in a hospital. You don't want that to happen nor do you want to increase your chances of melanoma........these other ladies have the right idea.

Darla:  2 words, "spray tan"  I love them.  For about $20 down here and 20 minutes of time, you come out looking brown and it lasts for about 2 weeks.  I go get them before showing this white skin to the world and no one can tell the difference between the real tan and the fake tan.  Then I also do the Sally hanson spray tan in a can for your legs.  Helps when you don't want to wear pantyhose.  Then take a great sunblock for your trip.

As others have recommended, I'd stick to the tanning lotions or spray tans instead of using a tanning bed or tanning booth.  When in the natural sun, wear SPF and wear a hat.  There are some great lotions on the market now that create a realistic/natural glow to your skin, and won't make you appear orange.

This comes from someone who used to go to tanning beds pretty regularly.  Until, that is, I was diagnosed with a Level IV melanoma in my arm.  My dermatologist pretty much determined that my skin cancer was a direct relationship to my tanning bed use.  I stopped tanning immediately after my diagnosis.

After extensive surgery, lymph node analysis, and other diagnostic tests, I am now cancer free, and have been for the past five years.  But I came very close......and I mean VERY close.....to losing my left arm because of it.  I still get checked out every six months in case of a re-occurrence.

Lotions won't make you lose appendiges, but tanning could.
