Protein Bars - Are they really good for you?

Okay - I'm having some trouble getting in all my protein.  I think this is one of the reason's that my scale is not moving, so this week I bought 2 protein bars.  I couldn't wrap my brain around eating either one until this morning.  (I think 210 calories is an awful lot of calories for a bar with 14g of protein.)  So the one that I am trying this morning is a High Protein Balance, Gold Crunch chocolate mint cookie bar.  This thing tastes too good.  Is it really okay for me to eat these things?

I'm not familiar with that particular brand but check the sugar. Sometimes even with a higher amount of protein there is a lot of sugar in them. I have a sugar intolerance so I can't do more than 10g at a time. BTW have you tried protein shakes? I seem to do better with those than the bars.

Sugar:  says 14 g.  I've eaten about 1/2 the bar.  I'm stopping now!!!  I've only tried the walmart, body fortress protein powder, chocolate.  Not an easy thing to do at work.  I used to drink one every morning for breakfast and my nut told me that she'd rather see me eating something in the morning, so I stopped.

Walmart carries the Pure Protein Bars in a lot of different flavors and those were the only ones I would buy. I can't remember but think they were around 7g sugar and a higher protein content. Tia turned me on to those a long time ago. I haven't done bars in a long time....I prefer to get my protein through regular food and the shakes but I'm also a lot further out than you are. The bars just don't taste the same to me anymore. I do the EAS protein powder in chocolate and make it with frozen berries, unsweetened soy milk and a little sweet & low & half and half. Can you switch your shake to the evening? or does your nut want you to stop them all together?

I have used the Pure Protein bars at wal mart, and more recently have found Proto Pure protein bars at a vitamin shop in the mall (Maybe Vitamin World? - the store with the green signs, not GNC)  It is 190 calories, 20 g of protein, 2 sugars, 7 sugar alcohol, and 3 net carbs. And it doesn't taste half bad either! :)

Thanks.  I still can't get over the amount of calories, but maybe I'm looking at it wrong.  I just think bars are easier than shakes here at work.  Hey, I see you're coming to St Michaels.  Vacation?

St Mike's is kind of a vacation - I just got back from taking my kids on our family vacation, but this year I decided to treat myself to a couple of quick get-aways.  So I am coming down for a weekend - may actually be bringing a friend with me - and Fri night we are going on the winery tour, Saturday we are going to walk the old town, the Maritime Museum,  and go out on the Patriot (a friend of mine captains the boat), and Sunday we will come home.  Are you in St Michael's?

Not in Michaels, but very near.  I love St. Michaels, it's so quaint.  Sounds like you've got a full schedule.

Hi Lisa, The ones that taste great are the ones with the high sugar content. You need to buy the protein bars that are very low in sugar like less than 5 grams a serving. You can find quite a few at walmart.  Just make sure to check the label.  Remember sugar stores as fat. Don't forget you are early out and you might dump on the high sugar content. Best of luck
