Hi Terri! Actually i went to a dietician for 9 months prior to surgery and I was on a mostly liquid diet the whole time.  Then two weeks before surgery I was on a full liquid diet.  the hard part is getting your mind wrapped around the fact that the eating habits have got to change.

Aaron, I know what you are saying about the mindset and that is the one really big thing that scares me, "Will I be able to get my mind wrapped around that fact!"  I sure hope so.  Be Healthy and Be Happy!

Terri,

It really took a lot of soul searching on my part and a LOT of mental "beat downs" to get my head around it all. in the long run, I was so much better off and right before surgery, there were certain things that I used to eat in abundance that would totally turn my stomach (red meat for example). It's been over a year since I had any carbonated beverage. You know what? I don't miss them at all Now with the small pouch that I have, I make all my food choices count on flavor and nutrition. I've said this many times and is my mantra...."eat to live not live to eat"

Hi Aaron,

That is the same mantra my husband lives by, he however has this unbelieveable metabolism and never gains a pound.  Since we married in 1992, I have gained over 65 lbs and he has not changed, still 150 pounds.

Hi Terri! Welcome to the Maryland board.   This is a very fun and supportive group of people both on and off the board.   You will find you can be as involved or un-involved as you want to be but posting is the first BIG step. I'm one of the older (both age and post-op-ness) ones here.  I had my RNY March 22, 2004 so I am coming up on 4 1/2 years post op.   I can honestly say that I do not know if WLS will lengthen my life, but I can say that it's given me the time I have back to enjoy and life to the fullest. Best wishes as your WLS journey continues and I hope to see more (or less . .. a little WLS humor there) of you! Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

Thanks Mo.  Wow, 4 1/2 years, that is great.  Obviously the weight was an issue but what else led you to the RNY surgery?  I mean, I know I am morbidly obese, but getting off meds is my prime issue.  That is where I am going with my question.  Terri

I had a BMI just over 50 and a list of co-morbidities .. high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, fatty liver , always right on the verge of my suger being to the point where I was formally diagnosed with Type II diabetes.  I think I probably had at least mild sleep apnea though I was never tested. My PCP originally brought up the idea of WLS surgery in August 2001 and I did some research on the OH website and made a few phone calls, but psyched msyelf again into thinking I could do this myself.   I could lease about 30 pounds and then it would come back with a vengeance and bring friends. I was slowly but surely withdraing from life other than going to work.  Going out to sporting events (ball games, NASCAR races, etc) was getting increasingly difficult because I was uncomfortable in the seats not to mention having mobility issues with the arthritis. In Janusry 2004 I decided that I was going to do something and I got serious about the RNY.  I am very fortunate to have a wonderful husband who supported my decision 100 % even though I think he was terrified.   He went with me to every appointment and was totally involved in the whole process with me.   Once I made up my mind I was able to get in for my consult, get a date and have my insurance approval fairly quickly.  I think it was maybe 7 1/2 weeks from my consult to surgery. I've lost and maintained over 100 pounds from my highest ever weight (tho not my starting weight).  I have struggled for the last 18 months or so with about 15 to 18 pounds that I have re-gained.  I am about 35 to 40 pounds from where I would like to be, but that is MUCH better than 140 to 150 pounds from where I want to be.   I have been working to lose the 15 to 18 pounds with some success and I'll keep after it.   If I never lose the rest and get to my goal I'll be somewhat disappointed but I am still so much better off and I can get out and enjoy life. I am not the most compliant WLS patient which might have a little to do with not reaching my goal .. but I've also had some issues following my surgery that continue.   Even with all that though, I would do it again in a heart beat!!! Hugs, Mo

Hi and welcome to the board:  I have just passed my 1st year surgiversary and when you said you wanted off the meds for diabetes I thought I would tell you my tale.  I took my last Diabetes meds the day before my surgury - My three month and six month bloodwork showed me with an a1c level of 6.9 withing the range desired with no Meds at all.  The only meds I take now are vitamins and  supplements.  I started taking three pills a day for diabetes; 1 a day for high bloodpressure, 1 for thyroid and 1 antidepressent - None of which I am still taking. DVR was my surgeorn and I feel you could not be in better hands. Good luck with the journey and GOD BLESS

Thank you Darla and congrats on your successful journey.  I so want to be off the meds but I worry, as I told Aaron, that my mindset is going to go against me.  I have not had a appointment with psych yet maybe we can find out why I love food so much.  Stay the course.  Be happy and be healthy.
