GREAT DEBATE-Charity

oh, i could talk about this forever. as a member of my company's volunteer leadership council, i can say that most people give of themselves and give their money because they've been taught by someone in their life, or an experience in their life, that people need people. i'm a huge supporter of things being funded through the private sector and believe that if we were taxed less, most people would be more generous with their money. i volunteer for many organizations throughout baltimore and anne arundel county, including habitat for humanity, ronald mcdonald house, red cross, christopher's place, our daily bread, girl scouts and more. not only do i love spending time with people that truly appreciate what i do, but it's also a great way to spend valuable time with your children. children LOVE doing volunteer work and it teaches them a lot about life in general. all that being said... i support the belief that by giving a person on the street money, you are supporting keeping them on the streets. without handouts, they are forced to seek food and shelter provided by people that are working diligently to end their plight.
Interesting, I have heard that by giving to people on the streat I am perpetuating a problem, but I wonder if I really am, I am sure they look for shelter and food regardless of whether I give them a dollar or not and I am not trying to be argumentative at all, but my hope is that I am giving a lil to help them get on the feet, should they choose to save the cash etc....now if they are going to buy alcohol or use it to make a car payment, then shame on me...
