Help with Protein Drinks/Powders/Bars

Hello Everyone! I have tried a several of the protein poweders and drinks and have found the Unjury to be too sweet and even the Necter One.  The Bariatric Advantage that you mix with water is is .  I have also tried Adkins and found that to be too sweet.  The one I did like in the RTD was EAS Advantage.  I also tried the Profect (the ones in the test tube looking container) and they were easy to get down, but then I read somewhere that they were not the best source of protein not to mention they are very expensive around 11.00 for three of them.  I am running out of options on the protein drinks, does anyone have any brands or other items they tried that worked well.  Also, I am at a point of incorporating protein bars into my diet, suggestions on ones that are not too chewy, or too crunchy would be helpful!  Any help you could give me would be most appreciated!   Thanks Terri

Alice Cooper!!!! You already mentioned the one I like, the RTD EAS.  I like the chocolate, it's kind of like Yoo-Hoo (if you close your eyes and wish hard!), and I use the French Vanilla as creamer in my coffee and tea (it's actually really good in vanilla chai tea). As far as protein bars, I think I've tried every possible brand out there, and the ONLY one I really like is the Pure Protein - they have a bunch of different flavors, I like them all - some, obviously are sweeter than others.  Right now, I'm eating a S'mores bar - 19 g protein, 5 g fat, 20 g carbs, and 2 g of sugar.  The ONLY issue for some people may be the sugar alcohols - 12 g.  As with all things when you're first post-op, it's trial and error.  You can buy the boxes of bars at Walmart, or go to the Vitamin Shoppe where they sell them individually, that way you don't waste $$ if you don't like them.

Happy proteining!!

Tia

I like the EAS powder too. I did happen to buy a huge bag at BJ's that is lasting me forever. I also use as a base, the Hood brand of choc milk, called calorie countdown. It is low carb, low sugar. It is the only choc. milk I have found that is low enough for us. I have found this at a WalMart Super Center and some Giants (not all). I have also bought Banana protein powder at the Vitamin Shoppe. I use this in the Hood choc. milk. Sometimes, I also put a little peanut butter in it. It really is a matter of personal taste. We are all so different in our likes and dislikes. As for bars, I also like the Pure Protein. I went in to a Walgreens once and found a large assortment of flavors of these sold individually. This was perfect for trying out diff flavors. I also like the Atkins Advantage Caramel line. They are like eating a candy bar. They may be a little chewier than you prefer though. I like Detour bars too. But they are also chewy like a candy bar. It really was a lot of trial and error. There are so many bars out there. I was surprised at how many are much too high in the sugars or sugar alchohols. Best of luck experimenting. Debbie

Deb Thanks, I have to get a prescription so I will check out what they have in the way of protein bars.   Thanks.  Where is the Vitamin Shoppe?  Is it local or on line?   Thanks

The Vitamin Shoppe is both online as well as a chain of stores. Their web site has a store locator to find the one most convenient for you.

Hi Tia,  I know what you mean by trial and error. I guess I will go get some EAS Vanilla and Chocolate as right now that seems to sit with me better tthan most.   I looked at alot of protein bars and they are loaded with sugar grams and that scares me a little.  I think I may have the dumping syndrome because Saturday I ate one meatball in spaghetti sauce that someone made.   I digested it well however, after a short time, I started to feel like I was going to vomit, and got a little light headed and just felt sick.  I later learned that the person put sugar in the sauce.   Question, is the smores bar a pure protein bar?  Also, I got some lowfat greek yogurt at Trader Joes and stuck my finger in it to taste it when I got home, it tasted like sour cream to me.  I guess if I put a little spenda in it with some fresh strawberries it should be ok?   I also got two small  fruit flavored ones and they seemed to have alot of sugar grams in them.   Thanks for the tips

I just got the EAS soy protein at wal mart and it makes me wanna !!!!!!  actually everything is making me wanna !!!!!  I just got some Designer Whey protein from www.bariatriceating.com so I'll let you know how it goes......I also got the daVinci sugar free syrups to put in it and the coffee.  OH  I also read on bariatriceating.com that people shouldn't be mixing their protein in milk!!!!!!!!!  I was surprised to see that because I thought milk would add extra protein to it but I guess milk has some sugar in it?????  anyway.....back to my !!!!!  (I just love that icon!  LOL)

Thanks Aaron it sounds like we are similar when it comes to what makes us  Yeah, I know I love this icon too!!!  I will have to read up on the no milk thing, because I thought the same as you it would provide an addition 7 or 8 grams of protein but maybe that is some of the problem with the protein.  Thanks for the tips.

I found that I like the Whey Gourmet Peanut Butter Chocolate flavor.  Tasts sort of like a melted milkshake to me.  I made it with milk and did fine, and also put a few ice cubes in it and put it in the blender to make it a bit more "shakey".  The cheapest place I found it is BariatricEating.com. I also like the Cytosport Protein Water.  I found that at the Vitamin Shoppe.  But I've seen it at some places online, too.
