I was watching the Today Show's coverage this morning on the life and unexpected death of Tim Russert.  Such a beloved man to so many people.  There was an interview with his doctor to explain exactly what caused his death (a ruptured cholesterol plaque in a coronary artery).  The coronary artery disease was known and thought to be managed by medication, although the doctor did state that Tim was struggling, as so many of us are with his weight, trying to get in shape.  He had just had a normal stress test on April 29th.  He was only 58.

When Matt Lauer asked what is the most important thing we can learn from Tims death, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, the chief medical editor for NBC said, "The most important thing is that Weight does matter and you have to get it down. Knowing your cholesterol does matter..."  I want that to stick with me for a long time.   I want that to stick with all of us for a long time. I want to put that right at eye level on my refrigerator and remember how I felt this morning when I heard it.  I want to remember that Tim's son is suffering, his wife is suffering, his father is suffering.

I want to remember that Dr. Snyderman also said: "Particularly poised on this weekend that no matter what your health, you hug your Dad today and you get ready for Father's Day because no matter what, we really do never know."  The sudden death of my own father punctuates that statement.  My father died in his sleep from complications of Type II diabetes and atherosclerosis.  Like Tim Russert, he was find one day and gone that night.

For all of us, let's remember that "weight does matter" and for those of us who are still lucky enough to have our father's here with us, hug him hard if you can reach out and touch him; hug him through the phone if distance separates you, and express how much you love him as if today was your last chance.

Love to All of My WLS Friends and their Families.

Thanks for sharing!  Tim was so young and it is so sad.  I was thinking of my husband since he has gain so much weight in the last 2 years.  I want him to be healthy and I showed him this post so he could read it.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
Those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind.
