Has anyone here used TriCare for their WLS? I curious about the procedure. I'm reading about other insurance and 6 month diets, psych evals, etc. Does TriCare require all of this? And, what doctors do they use for referrals. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Welcome to the MD forum!!    The best thing that you can do to find out what your insurance requires it to call your insurance carrier.  They will be able to tell you if it is covered and the doctors that your insurance participates with.  I have Aetna and my insurance covered everything but someone's else Aetna insurance might not cover everything mine did.   Call Monday Morning and keep us posted on your journey.   What WLS are you looking into?  Best of luck

I have Tricare as well.  Well actually USHF. but they are military insurance as well.  Everything with my surgery was covered!  I have to have a 6 month documented diet, all the psych evals and all the testing done prior to approval. But they did cover everything!!!  My PCM sent me to the doctors at BAyview.  I had a great experience.  Let me know if you need any other infomation and the best of luck on this journey, it is a great one!!

Thanks for your response, I'm using Military Treatment Facilities right now; but thinking of switching over to TriCare at John Hopkins (US Family Health). I'm tired of getting a different doctor everytime I go to National Navy and my PCM doesn't have an appointments available. Is Bayview the JH Bariatric Surgery Center? Is it possible that you could lose too much weight in the six months and they wouldn't approve any WLS surgery? I know I can't get all of this off by myself.

Tricare at Johns Hopkins is were I am seen.  I have found it great!! And yes, Bayview is the JH Bariatric Surgery Center.  I believe that if your PCM refers you to have WLS that if all your testing and prior 6 month documented diet is done, then you should be fine.  For me I was approved on the first try! Best of luck, and let me know if you have any questions.  I can try to answer the best I can.

Hi Mini,  I too like Gina have the US family helath plan. I go to the clinic in Odenton. I was fed up with the Militray docotrs everyitme I go I see someone new. I also have all my referrals to Bayview. You will absolutely love the people there. I think if you plan to switch over to us family health plan it will take a month to get started but yes you do have to have the 6 month diet and nut and pscych evals. Please read my latest blog on what happened with my 6 month diet. If you have any questions please feel free to message me. Good luck with your decision. Candie
