A little discouraging

I have been reading some of the messages and other information on the OH site and notice that people who have had WLS especially RNY are eating sweets and other junk food.   It is a little discouraging with my surgery coming up and considering everyone has went through so much.  For example a lady I work with her husband was over 450 pounds and has bad knees, and hips and had the RNY in November he lost a 100 lb and he was doing so well until last month.  Now she told me he is drinking regular soda again and eating all kinds of chips and candy and other stuff I thought would be almost physcally impossible to eat.  Of course, he is not on this site nor has he been getting an any outside support such as a support group.   On the up note, I am so glad I found this site and all my new friends on it, support I know will keep me straight and I have to remember that.   Thanks for letting me vent

Terri - Boy, do I have a lot to say about this (surprise, surprise!)  I can't right now, but I will get back to you. Keep something in mind, "Even though you CAN eat it, doesn't mean you SHOULD." Chin up!!! Tia

Yes it happens the appitite returns and if you are not a dumper you can eat junk.  I like for people to understand that this is not a cure-all and the surgery doesn't fix your head or your bad habits and that at about 18 months out it starts to go back on you to maintain your weight loss and it's still not easy.  I so hate for people to say WLS is taking the easy way out because it has never been easy for me but it is doable.  There is lots of support on this board and Tia, Cira and so many others always jump right in with suggestions that will get you through.  Hang in there, ask questions this is the emotional time of the journey and lots of what ifs. Terri, Unfortunately that is the truth as the time passes your body begins to adjust and what you could not tolerate right after surgery you will start tolerating it later on.  Not everyone is the same.  I used to dump with sugar and now I have noticed that I don't really dump anymore like I used to.   This is a tool that has been given to us. Yes the very first 6 months to a year is the easiest to lose weight but after that it is all on you and your tool.   This is a new life with new commitments and when we chose to have this surgery we agreed to make the life changes and stick to them. Unfortunately there are many peoole who do not chose to stay committed.   But the good thing is that we all have eachother so we can look for support when needed.   It is very important to go to support groups, stay in touch with others here on OH and when you feel like you might stray ask for help we will stand by you and help you. Hugs

Thank you all so much! I guess it is just to hard to imagine because I have not went through the surgery yet.  I know better than anyone how emotional eating can take over someone's life. I plan to go to the support groups, get phone numbers if I can, but most of all stay on these boards and the OH site.  I do need and will need all of you as I take this journey and from what I can see so far, you will all be there. I feel truly blessed to have found this site. I think I am getting addicted to computer now! LOL

I am almost 8 weeks post-op and i had a Verical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) which, of course, is different than other WLS (RNY or Band).  I have heard and read (on this and another forum) that some people do start to eat again and gain weight back.  I don't know if it has to do with the type of surgery...whether or not they are getting support through groups or home, etc....whether they feel they do not deserve to be healthy and thinner....whether they are receiving sabotaging messages from others...or a hundred other reasons.  All i know, for me, is that if i feel like i am loosing control (down the line) i will seek help.  That is all any of us can do and it seems to me to be the best course of action.  We have gone through so much related to weight  (most of us for our entire lives) even surgery.  This is difficult.  It is not a panacea.  As they say, it is a "tool".  Well, tools can get rusty or dull and we sharpen them or oil them, right?  Shouldn't the same hold true for this TOOL?  If needed, there is much help out there.  One only need seek it.
