Liver Enzymes elevated
Nicole -
I just went through this last week, in fact, it almost halted my surgery last week. They quickly yanked me in for bloodwork and sent me for a liver sonogram. It could be: fatty liver (most overweight people have it), hepatitis or any number of things. My vote's on the fatty liver, which will go away as you lose more. That's what the diagnosis was with mine, which I thought was a little bizarre, given that I didn't have it 140 pounds ago!!!
Nope, don't worry, just do your follow-up.

I am having the same problem but didn't before surgery. I have lost 250 lbs and my levels went up a little this month. My Drs are watching it.
I am interested what is it about athletes. I work out every day. I have a trainer 2 x a week. I go to the gym almost daily and I swim almost daily and I started swimming 9 wks post-op. my surgery was Aug.18, 2006 so I have been working out for about 2 yrs and then I added the gym about6 months ago.
Oops my mom is here-tomorrow is my birthday and we are going to lunch.Long story but my biological mom asked me to spend tomorrow with her before this one asked so now i am going out 2 days in a row. Plus one of my dearest friends is here from Colorado until sun. I saw her a year ago but i hadn't seen her husband in 3 yrs and my Godchildren in 2 yrs. It has been fun. They have all been shocked and very happy for me.Life is amazing. Gotta run.

Sounds like you are doing wonderfully. I actually enjoy exercise now but I keep doing it too infrequently. I love to swim. that is what i do right now. i want to add weight lifting in there but I've been avoiding it for some reason. Gotta get my butt moving more. I can swim 18 laps in less than an hour. i'm very proud of myself. how much can you do?
I am not going to worry about the liver enzyme for now. They are probably elevated cuz of the surgery. I have no symptoms of gall bladder or liver problems so i'm gonna assume all is well. I see my surgeon on monday, I will talk about it with her.
Well, everyone gave good answers.
I just want to wish you all the best and keep us posted. Hopefully on
your next bloodwork it has resolved itself.
I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
Those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind.

I've had to see a liver specialist recently because I had VERY high liver enzymes and he said when your just a few months post op all the fat that your losing is being passed through your liver or something which can cause issues.
I was recently diagnosed with NAFLD (non alcoholic fatty liver disease) and scarring on my liver though from a biopsy and have to be followed every 6 months and if they spike super high again I have to call them immediately. I have a family history of liver disease though and they were more worried because my liver appeared enlarged through ultrasound and CT scan even worse than before surgery. They stopped just short of calling it NASH but he said it could very well be called that. Also he did say if it was to advance quickly it'd still be 5-10 years before I show any signs of trouble or any real serious issues but most likely with losing weight and avoiding alcohol and stuff it will take 20-30 years to do anything that will needed treated.
I wouldn't worry right now especially since they are going to follow you. I've had elevated - high liver enzymes for 5-6 years atleast. The worried a lot more bout it when my weight loss has slowed down and it jumped up even higher.
It could be caused be certain meds too, if youve been on anti biotics recently or anything that could cause elevated enzymes. :)
It should be aok though. :)
I am loving life that is for sure.It is so different. My endocrinologist said it was fatty liver but for years blood work has been off/on with all my health problems. I have a list but just the lupus can wreck havoc with blood work.
My Mom counted my laps last summer. I can't remember what is was but I think around 50. I switch up all the time. I was swimming daily and was just maintaining then I started the trainer and started losing again. I generally work in the gym for an hour and then te pool or an hour or so. I do all kinds of things. Early on I took a lot of different pool classes like Ai Chi (Tai Chi) in water , swimnastics , aquajog , arthritis classes , yoga and swimming on my own and laps.
I just wanted to thank you for your response. I have to run. I am sorry i keep falling asleep typing. I have a big sleep problem partly because I have to much to do an amazing gift, I have a big day tomorrow so I have to get to bed maybe we can catch up n We can talk sometime if you want,

Nicole, don't panic. Many SSRIs cause elevated liver enzymes, coupled with the fact that you may have fatty liver. These were the causes of my elevation two weeks prior to surgery (fatty liver and having been on Zoloft). My doc assured me of his confidence these were the cause, but did a Hep screen just in case, which came back negative. I'll bet your next test is better.
