2nd Consult w/Dr. Von Rueden
Darla -
In my attempt to get back on the wagon, I'm seeing him on May 7. I'm switching everything over. He's going to kill me - I haven't seen him since my 1 year. Me, the girl who always dispenses advice, can't take care of her own stuff!!!!!! UGH!!!!
But I'm looking forward to seeing him, even if he yells at me.

Hey Nicole! I actually have spoken with someone who has had the RNY and who has had the Band. Both have lost a good amount of weight and both have had their prolems. 1st, weight loss is slower. With the Band, it restricts your stomach so you eat less. Well I'm thinking, I've been eating less (or atleast trying) for years now, and it hasn't worked. Also, with the band you can still eat what you want just less. With the band, their is alot more visits/maintenance (fills-scared of needles...lol). Of course there are the concerns with erosion/slippage. And two, its in your body forever ever if you reach goal. Now some great things I have been told is that every time u get a fill, your honeymoon period starts over ( I do like that), surgery time is less, less risk, and you don't usually have nutrional problems/vitamin deficiency's. Now these are just some of the pro's and con's, so please don't flame me...(I will feel bad...lol) As for the RNY, there are Pro's and Con's with that also. I'm just really up in the air. DVR also talked about the Sleeve Surgery, but my Insurance doesn't cover it....

When I was a trauma nurse i preferred doing ABG's over venous blood draws - find the radial pulse, stick the needle in, pull out after a few seconds done. EASY! A bit more pain than some things but it also has a lot to do with technique. If you are totally freaked about it MAYBE they will give you a local anesthetic injection (lidocaine) first but why the heck would you want that - now you have 2 sticks. Another option is to ask about EMLA which is a anesthetic cream. We use to use it years ago with children anxious about IV's etc. PLEASe don't stress over this - it just makes it worse. I've seen pts. pass out just over the stress reaction of getting a needle. Do you hate all needles - becuase if you do , you get stuck everytime they give you a fill with the lap band. Again, another needle you barely feel.
