Hi Everyone! I had my surgery 10 1/2 months ago and have lost 135 pounds.  However, about 3 months ago, my back and leg started hurting and it has gotten progressively worse.  I think I need to see someone but am unsure of where to go.  I have not yet gotten a Maryland doctor and will go to a group meeting in Rockville on Sunday.  Does anyone have suggestions?????  Please help.  Thanks.

Hi there!  I'm not sure if this is related or not but it sounds like about the same time frame as my problem.  I was losing weight great and getting really healthy, but began noticing pain in my legs and buttocks.  What I found out was that my body was very accustomed to having a good bit of padding on my behind.  That was disappearing fast.  I hadn't considered this and was stilling sitting much as I always did.  No surface was too hard.  I was actually causing pressure on my tailbone and nerves which was creating the pain.  I am now more careful about how I sit and what I sit on.  A nice soft cushion is a must for hard surfaces.  I am really happy with my weight loss and improved health, but I must say there are times when I really miss my bottom and boobs. *grin*

Well, I am really glad that you posted!  Sorry about the boobs and bottom, but all in all, I bet you don't miss them toooooo much...........LOL Who did you see for the problem?  Did they have to do an MRI or such?  Did you end up taking any meds?  I know we are not suppose to take ibuprophen, but I did yesterday with an acid reducer - I hurt so badly!  The last time I took my Tramodol (sp), I was sick all day so I did not want to take that pain reliever again. Do you keep a cushion with you when you travel and did the pain eventually go away????? I had a breast reduction done a couple of years before the wls, and was so thankful I did.  I was a J - yep a J cup and the surgery has really held up well with the weight loss.  I was not sure what would happen but so far so good. Thanks again for the post!  Tracey

Actually just had a candid conversation with my primary about it.  Since it is a pressure related thing it was just a matter of whether or not I could take the pain or needed something for it.  I spent many years on pain medicines and really don't like them so I mostly just relied on cushions and Tylenol, though Tramadol was necessary sometimes.  The good news is, as you continue to get accustomed to your new body you also will carry yourself differently.  New postures develop and once they do, the pressure on those bones and nerves is relieved a great deal.  I no longer have the problem unless I sit for a very prolonged period of time on something hard like bleachers or such.

I've not yet had my WLS, but I have previously had intense - and I mean intense - sciatica damage. While I was pregnant three years ago, I was practically confined to bed because of my severe sciatica issues.  I had had back issues for 12 years or so, but it became almost intolerable while I was pregnant.  Obviously, because I was pregnant, most medical remedies were off limits to me.  I tried accupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy, steroid shots in my spine, and countless chiropractor and orthopaedic doctor appointments.   Nothing worked.   Nothing, that is, until I made an appointment with MD Brain and Spine in Annapolis.  I met with Dr. Gary Dix, and he set me up for a disctectomy, minor surgery that had dramatic impact.  He fixed me right up, and even on the recovery table, I knew that the surgery was a total success.  I would totally recommend anyone with back issues or sciatica problems to go and see him. You can contact him at:  MD Brain and Spine, 2002 Medical Pkwy # 430, Annapolis - (410) 266-2720.  Also check out their web site at:  MDBrainandSpine.com . Good luck to you!

Thanks so much for the info.  I will check it out!  I went to a doc yesterday and he gave me some more muscle relaxers - but they really make me sleepy!  They did some xrays and want to do an MRI, which I probably should do just to see what is going on in there!  I really appreciate the info.  And good luck to you with your WLS - hope it will be soon for you!  Tracey

Tracey, I had sciatica start 3 weeks ago and I hoped and hoped it would go away.  I finally gave in and my doc prescribed me Celebrex and so far it's helping.  I have a band rather than RNY so I'm okay with anti inflammatory more than a bypass patient, but I still can only do it short term.  I hope you feel better soon.  I know alternating ice and heat is suppose to help and some lower back stretches are good too.

Revised to VSG (6/11/09) weighing 253...

Thanks so much for the info!  I am hoping beyond hope that it goes away on its own - HA HA!  I should get a couple of answers tomorrow when I call the doc back.  I love the support here at the Maryland board!  Thanks again, Tracey
