Good afternoon!!  ****don't forget I'm still new and in the asking questions stage*** Quck question, I have read that after you have WLS there is no drinking, especially not beer and that liquor will affect you alot different.  Now when I first heard this, I was like dawg gone it, but if I can't drink no more, then I just can't drink.  So I was ok with that!   So can you or can't you drink?  Is everyone different?   T

Hey T! Well my doctor, Dr. von Rueden, was with Dr. Moen at GBMC, and I think their instructions are probably still similar even though DVR has gone to St. Agnes. Not sure if I remember everything correctly, but I know DVR discouraged the drinking of alcohol until you were several months out.  I waited until I was 10 months out and had a s/f margarita (obviously, only the mix is s/f), and WHAM! I don't remember the next two hours!!!!  Hopefully, I didn't do anything stupid, or if I did, there are no videos to prove it!!   I'm really only a social drinker, and it's a good thing, because I'm a cheap drunk now!!!  Seriously, a couple sips and I AM BOMBED!!!  It doesn't last long though!!!  The one thing I didn't like is that since alcohol lowers your "though processes," I tended to eat and drink together (ALWAYS a no-no!!).  I'm just careful with what I have.  I've had beer, wine and all sorts of mixed drinks, and as long as I don't overdo it, I'm okay. Hope this helps! Tia

ohhhhhhh ok!!!  Well I'm a social drinker...I guess.  I mean I don't know really.  I don't keep any alcohol in my house and I dont drink when I go out to dinner.  They only real time I drink is when I go to a Cabaret.  And lets see, so since Jan 1, 08, I only have drank twice...lol  I guess after surgery it just affects everyone different.  Gosh I have such a long way to go....Here I am talking about to drink or not to drink and I haven't had my initial dr's appointment....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!  I'm so impatient...  Lord give me strength... Every doctor is different with all of there instructions, but overall, alcohol consumption is discouraged for post ops for two reasons ... EMPTY calories and the overall effect on your liver .. things process differently with your re-routed innards and the liver works a bit harder. I signed a contract with my doctor pre-op and one of the items in that contract was NO alcohol for a full year after surgery.   With a couple of minor exceptions, I made it that year.   Even now at 4 plus years post op, I am still a 'cheap' drunk/date as Tia puts it.  Does not take much for me to be loopy.   I definitely do not drink if I am going to be behind the wheel of a vehicle .. not matter how much time I may have to 'sober' up.   I had fatty liver disease pre-op (the gastroentronologist warned me of non-alcoholic cirhossis ?) so I try to be conscious of my intake and potential harm I am doing to myself.    Best wishes as your WLS journey continues. Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

Wow Mo!!  A Contract...lol  I guess the Doctor feels that its that important.  For the most part of what I have read, alot of doctors discourage it.  Knowing me, I will follow the Dr's orders/instructions to a T.  But, I do know somebody who had the WLS, and she drinks like a fish!  Nothing seems to phase her. And she eats alot of unhealthy stuff too!!!  But she looks good and has maintained her weight.  I wouldn't be that lucky.   T

I have an unusual doctor too!   We both signed the contract  .. AND  I left the hospital with his home phone number and instructions to call him any time of day or night if there was a problem!
